Project idea... - Carlos182 - 23-06-2012

Got an idea floating around in my head.
Been thinking about it since I think it was Dan 'shopped Chris' estate into a pickup.
Just want all your opinions if it would be viable, i.e. strength etc.
Won't be happening until we move house but thought I best start looking around see if I can find one cheap mayyyybe.

RE: Project idea... - cwspellowe - 23-06-2012

Yeah it'll be totally viable. Would be best using the 3dr quarters and bracing at the B-pillars. The rear might be ok for strength as the beam bolts across both sides.

RE: Project idea... - strictly_perv - 23-06-2012

I remember doing it to an old 505 estate at college as a end of year project. Don't think it would be allowed on the road though.

Hmm. Was thinking strength issues down the length, lots of flex...?
Why the need for quarters though, weld the rear doors shut?

Also for anyone who hasn't seen the 'shop

It would be with a proper inspection. You can put anything on the road as long as it meets C&U regs

Wouldn't an engineers report allow it on the road...?
There was a guy who converted a sedan to a 2dr...

RE: Project idea... - cwspellowe - 23-06-2012

You'd want the 3dr sides as the front door will be bigger and will allow you a larger cab without looking weird. If you did it like in the photoshop your knees would be under your chin when driving!

This, the cab on a 5 door style would be wayyyyyy to small, you would defo need a 3 door conversion, i know of a few estates that have been made in to pick ups, theres an E36 pick up a mk3 golf pick, ect ect fint the project threads for them ( i no the golf has one and some one on club306 knows the guy who buit it) they should give you more info on structure and how to get it past vosa

hero.

epic idea, to the point i really want to do it or help someone do it, would be epic winning!!!11!

RE: Project idea... - Scott - 23-06-2012

I'd love to see this done. As said though you'd need to do it with a 3 door, and I think it'd need to be done in the same way as the 2-door sedan was done, cutting the 3dr behind the b-pillars and welding the rear of the estate to it with the doors welded shut too.

This could be epic. Do it.

RE: Project idea... - Niall - 23-06-2012

I've got a 3dr shell I will donate for free to the cause to be butchered if you want to come and get it?

RE: Project idea... - Scott - 23-06-2012

Winning. Even more reason now!

RE: Project idea... - Dan! - 23-06-2012

Just call me Sir Alan Sugar.

RE: Project idea... - Carlos182 - 23-06-2012

Righty ho then.
Won't be happening for a little while as we don't move for 2 weeks. No garage until then, but after then it's all gooood.

Next question, any 3dr doors should fit on?
If so just steal the pillars from the 3dr or move the existing ones back?
Would need to weld a plate/sheet in behind the cab too or it could be a bit cold/damp.

Getting more and more tempting every time I think of it tbf. Even if it turns out to be utter shit would still be a lsugh having a go!

RE: Project idea... - Eeyore - 23-06-2012

itll be epic if it happens! Big Grin

RE: Project idea... - Carlos182 - 23-06-2012

Aha! Just looked through the golf pickup project and got an idea on how to do it without using any bits from a 3 door.

I NEED MONEY AND A GARAGE NOW.

RE: Project idea... - Connor - 24-06-2012

Would it not be easier to start with a 3dr and then stick a 'state boot on that?

I don't see how you could do it without using a 3dr, without making it look terrible to be honest Undecided

RE: Project idea... - Matt - 24-06-2012

I'm guessing it's going to be a tiny cab

RE: Project idea... - Niall - 24-06-2012

Think about where your seat is in a 5 door. The back of it is past the rear of the door. In a 3dr it's not unless your a really lanky prick like me.

RE: Project idea... - Carlos182 - 24-06-2012

Will post a photo of how I'm thinking of doing it when I get home.
I won't try and explain it or it'll go terribly wrong haha!
