Map is the one that sits on top of the manifold right next to the throttle body. Will have either a blue or black label on top and has a 3 wire plug.

Just fit that, service it and if it's still playing up, we will plug it in at fcs and see what the game is.

Re: Ed's MINTY (fully-working!) Ph3 Astor GTi6 - Ed Doe - 10-06-2012

lol f*ck Mazz is gonna be annoyed; the to-do list is never ending! Just when I say "this is the last weekend I'll have to fanny about with the car, another thing pops up. I've not even fitted the group n engine mounts yet either!! Tongue

Re: Ed's MINTY (fully-working!) Ph3 Astor GTi6 - Niall - 10-06-2012

Man up!

Re: Ed's MINTY (fully-working!) Ph3 Astor GTi6 - Grant - 10-06-2012

Tell her to f*ck off!

Well ok, that may be a little harsh, but she has her time doing housework, cooking and other things women enjoy, its only fair you have your time...

Besides, if you didnt do these things, the car would be useless, therefore rendering it a waste of money... Think how pissed she would be then...

Just my justification lol

Re: Ed's MINTY (fully-working!) Ph3 Astor GTi6 - Ed Doe - 10-06-2012

lol i'm gonna leave it for now, see when I can drag up the enthusiasm to go to Curt's to get the sensors plugs and coils. i know it *should* be an easy job, but after the rear beam swap which should've been a doddle, I'm pretty hesitant to even attempt the simplest jobs for a little while....

Re: Ed's MINTY (fully-working!) Ph3 Astor GTi6 - Niall - 10-06-2012

No one ever said a rear beam swap would be easy!

Man the fook up!

It'll all be worth it in the end ED... Big Grin

I just need someone to hold my nipples whilst I work. You know, maybe the odd cheeky tweek just to keep me concentrating. Then I'll be fine....

lmao Walked into that one Niall Tongue

No.

That's grants job lmao

Still doesn't move away from the fact that you need a serious bitch slap and a massive dose of MTFU!

It's all about telling women...

"GET BACK TO THE KITCHEN, BITCH!"

You have much to learn young apprentice. It's all about not letting them out of the kitchen in the first place Wink

Re: Ed's MINTY (fully-working!) Ph3 Astor GTi6 - Ed Doe - 11-06-2012

Right.

I popped out this evening to fit my new tyres on the nad, and then thought whilst out there I'd pop the icv from my old '6 on to see if it solved the aforementioned issue....

It now idles well, which is great; definitely an improvement, but the issue is still there... I had a bit of a play and got a video of the issue. It seems that the throttle is not progressive; if you gently open the throttle as in the video, the revs raise very slowly, then suddenly shoot up to 2.5-3k....

Another thing; the engine seems to 'bog' more than the old one did when opening the throttle wide quickly to 'blip' it...

now are these symptoms just a result of the reduced back-pressure from the exhaust (2 straight-through boxes and a 2-1 winpipe)? Or could the symptoms be tps-related?

Anyways, enough whittering, video:

As always, any ideas much appreciated.

Re: Ed's MINTY (fully-working!) Ph3 Astor GTi6 - strictly_perv - 11-06-2012

Sounds like a faulty TPS to me

Re: Ed's MINTY (fully-working!) Ph3 Astor GTi6 - Dum-Dum - 11-06-2012

IMO could still be a faulty MAP sensor

When you open the throttle the amount of air flow increase isnt directly proportional to the degrees of throttle opening.

This is more pronounced on engines with big throttle bodies ie the GTi6.

Re: Ed's MINTY (fully-working!) Ph3 Astor GTi6 - Ed Doe - 11-06-2012

ok so we've got one for tps, and one for map; any more for any more?!

Re: Ed's MINTY (fully-working!) Ph3 Astor GTi6 - Grant - 11-06-2012

Also, something worth considering...

It does sound a little tappy in that video... Could be the camera mike though

ninja

Re: Ed's MINTY (fully-working!) Ph3 Astor GTi6 - Niall - 11-06-2012

Hmm I thought mine was quite tappy.....

Re: Ed's MINTY (fully-working!) Ph3 Astor GTi6 - Dum-Dum - 11-06-2012

Now you say it, it does sound a little tappy.

could be a bottom pulley rattle rather than a tap though

Re: Ed's MINTY (fully-working!) Ph3 Astor GTi6 - Grant - 11-06-2012

No, I would say it could likely be a tappy eninge....

How bad if it was... Popcorn

Re: Ed's MINTY (fully-working!) Ph3 Astor GTi6 - Jenkosowls - 11-06-2012

Coolant temp sensor can cause bogyness and irratic power surges

Ed's MINTY (fully-working!) Ph3 Astor GTi6 - Matt - 11-06-2012

Sounds like it could be coming from cambelt/waterpump area Wink

Re: Ed's MINTY (fully-working!) Ph3 Astor GTi6 - Grant - 11-06-2012

Nah, tappy engine...
Smile

Re: Ed's MINTY (fully-working!) Ph3 Astor GTi6 - Dum-Dum - 11-06-2012

Dunno, whatever it is id wanna get it looked at. Could be serious.

Dum-Dum Wrote:Dunno, whatever it is id wanna get it looked at. Could be serious.

Probably just a few slightly bent valves. Definitely a valve tap!

Re: Ed's MINTY (fully-working!) Ph3 Astor GTi6 - Dum-Dum - 11-06-2012

Its alright, worst case scenario he can put his old engine in, that one didnt tap.

No actually I think it did, so many tappy GTi6s out there i forget which is which.

If it didn't, it will when he restarts it. I removed it with the crane on the cambelt. Skipped a few teeth. No biggie

Ed's MINTY (fully-working!) Ph3 Astor GTi6 - Ed Doe - 11-06-2012

Oh for f*cks sake!

It doesn't sound tappy you bunch of knobbers!

Go troll someone else! lol

@Jenk; does the temp sensor cause these issues exactly tho? I thought it caused a wandering idle?

Re: Ed's MINTY (fully-working!) Ph3 Astor GTi6 - Niall - 11-06-2012

Ed he's right it can do. For the sake of 8 quid, a new temp sensor is well worth doing as it does "freshen" the engine up no end!
