1999 Cabriolet Cleanup! - pugolliek - 09-09-2017

So picked her up this morning, 78k miles, no tax no test, a VERY milky back window, roof operated manually as the hydraulics had long since given up the ghost, according to the seller.

He had owned it for 18 months after buying it off his friend, who had had it a similar length of time. A nasty scratch that runs the passenger side of the bonnet to the petrol tank filler cap on the driver's side rear quarter panel.

Test drive showed everything as should be from what I know about 306s (this is number 4) so handed over some notes and off I went home.

Didn't miss a beat the 70 mile trip home.
List of jobs to do so far-
Oil change and plugs
Air & Fuel filter change
Timing belt (no history with car)
Front windows not working, passenger side silent, driver side switch buzzing when pressed
Replace broken aerial (70 miles home in silence talking to myself)
Give it a good scrub!
Roof needs a good clean (sitting for a while so mkre green than blue)
Refurbish cyclones (1 or 2 bubbles)
See if a good clean and polish takes the nasty look off the scratches
Maybe have a look at the hydraulics on the roof [Image: 2e9de815e168e52eef926b14454deb66.jpg][Image: 6f0d1f71d1ed447f80362a29a9e7fe58.jpg][Image: ddd37f1570ec286e246cb0b7df016e31.jpg][Image: 2c35bb491d930fd442f50a18ae3ae2ea.jpg][Image: 99f16fbb7074ba69da4a63186509785c.jpg][Image: 674fbea52125e6934421ee87446207b0.jpg]

nice machine lad bit different to the usual dturbo 3nicks craic

RE: 1999 Cabriolet Cleanup! - pugolliek - 10-09-2017

So giving the body a wash helped take the horrible look off most of it, and giving the roof a scrub made...no difference at all! Awaiting delivery of stuff off eBay that will treat the green mould and staining, and also for the milky rear window.

Front windows now going down and back up, removed, stripped and rebuilt both switches and they're working! For now anyway

1999 Cabriolet Cleanup! - pugolliek - 21-09-2017

First evening I've had a chance to go near the cab, mainly because it had stopped raining for 5 minutes and more importantly because the solution i ordered to clean the manky roof had arrived. Bought off eBay and came recommended, picture below. Mixed up and gave a good couple of coats with the sponge and a lot of elbow grease with a soft brush. Sadly by the time I had rinsed it off it had gotten too dark to take pictures that actually show anything so I'll take them in the morning. If the amount of gunky green water that came off is anything to go by I'm optimistic it's taken a good amount of the crime off it! Pictures to follow in the morning if it's dry.[Image: e1c531cb4d6be7a997edeafff92a1118.jpg]

So came back from a week in Barcelona, and can't find the one key I have for the cab anywhere! Rang Autokey, and they want €350-450 to cut and code a new one including call-out. I'm sure I can get a set of keys locks and the necessary from a breakers for less than that.

Plugs, oil and filter done today. This was the condition of the plugs I removed. Anyone think they're a little oily?[Image: 9053c5f734ed676200f554e2e9ace62c.jpg]

That's gotta' be a relief!  Get a spare key cut sharp-ish.  Doesn't cost that much to get an ECU unlocked but changing all of the door locks and ignition barrel is going to be a PITA.  If you can find someone to programme a transponder too then all good.  Anyone local with PP2000 may be able to help you.

Thanks very much! A weight off to say the least! Rang a few places to get quotes and got estimates between 200 and 450 to have a key cut and programmed based on the VIN number. Which I would still have to pay even if it didn't work if the locks had been changed previously. Getting it cut tomorrow! Also any 306 over here that isn't 'lowered 3 nicks dturbo laaad' is very very rare, so getting bits would have been great fun!

Mmmm, that sounds CRAZY expensive.  You can get key blanks off eBay for a few quid and I wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't get a copy cut reasonably cheaply somewhere.  Not sure if your local place would do them though.  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEUGEOT-106-205-206-306-405-406-2-BUTTON-REMOTE-KEY-FOB-CASE-SHELL-UNCUT-BLADE-/182749706237?epid=12006502973&hash=item2a8cbb37fd:m:m3E9jcKEWnmzC-8n77KXNcw

You can get the transponder chips for next to nothing too.  You just need to find someone near you with PP2000 who'll programme it for a bit of beer money!  I'd do it for you but am in England not Ireland!!

RE: 1999 Cabriolet Cleanup! - pugolliek - 06-10-2017

My plan is to get a spare cut and programmed then gut it and install one of those keyless entry sets from eBay Cully did a guide on a few years ago! And I have PP200 but no key code! Rang the local Peugeot garage, ended up speaking to the owner, who has the same weakness for crusty french scrap as most people on here. Told me about an automatic one owner he used to have, and finished the call with 'when you get sorted bring it in for a look!'

Ahh, that sounds better! Smile

RE: 1999 Cabriolet Cleanup! - td_dan - 07-10-2017

Could always soft unlock it by disconnecting the ECU while running then remove the immobiliser pins. Central locking will still work and you can then just buy another key without having to get it programmed

1999 Cabriolet Cleanup! - pugolliek - 09-12-2017

First morning in a long time it's been dry enough to step outside without getting drenched, so fitted the new battery and treated the rear window to some plastic polish I got which made.... No difference at all! It doesn't bother me much as I rarely use my rear view mirror but was wondering from an NCT/MOT point of view would it be allowed? Also replacing the battery didn't fix the rev counter twitching, any ideas?

Happy New year! Did a bit before Christmas, namely resoldered the door loom where the wire for the window and the central locking had worn through, so any time you lock it with the key the locks would unlock immediately after locking. All sorted now though! Insurance expires on my other car on the 18th, so going to Renew it on this, and then have something to pick the kids up in (no personal mileage on company van)

1999 Cabriolet Cleanup! - pugolliek - 22-01-2018

So NCT time on Saturday morning! Friday night (minus 2 degrees) I went out to check all was well and fit the daughter's seat, I ran my hand over the rear window and it cracked! Had anticipated it failing anyway so taped it up with clear parcel tape and drove it in.

Unsurprising- it failed

Surprising- no mention of the rear window!

Failed on:
Both front ball joints
Indicator repeater
Steering rack gaiter
Alignment to be redone

All in I reckon not bad for a 500 quid car that was sitting for 18 months!

Drive it Sunday morning to my local Sunday League team who were playing at home (I play and I'm chairman) and the match was abandoned after 30 mins due to a waterlogged pitch. Cue 45 mins of pushing A4s, insignias, c5s and Passats out of the muck, and I started up and bounced out! Cue smug smiles!

Also had my Chief Mechanic Chloe with me for the test!

1999 Cabriolet Cleanup! - pugolliek - 19-02-2018

So Friday and Saturday I replaced both front balljoints, driver's side steering gaiter, passenger side indicator bulb, 'adapted' the airbag light and last night brought it in for retest and... It passed!
The alignment was borderline and just about scraped a pass, so I'll get it done anyway and it needs a track rod end as well but it's on the road for another year!

Not updated this in a long time, however that ends this weekend as it's NCT day next Tuesday, and in the midst of house moves, the girls getting bigger and another one on the way it had been long fingered. Had a look at her this evening and it needs a serious clean out, moisture from the gap in the driver's door and the split rear window has left the interior rather undesirable! Saturday morning is scrubbing time!

Nice to see you back. Keeping the damp out of an old car at this time of the year is a challenge. Hope it sails through its test.

Thanks lads! She's 20 years old this week, insurance renewal has gone from €1100 third party down to €430 fully comp, on a limited mileage policy. More money for parts!

RE: 1999 Cabriolet Cleanup! - Joep83 - 18-01-2019

Is this a rear window from Eftim? Hear good stories about these! And he is a seller one can trust!

I am also working on a China Blue converible to get her back to 100% condition!

1999 Cabriolet Cleanup! - pugolliek - 18-01-2019

Yeah it's one of his! Going to fit it once the weather gets a bit warmer, and I'll let you know how it goes! Others on here have done it and had no trouble. You have any pictures of yours?

1999 Cabriolet Cleanup! - pugolliek - 25-01-2019

Following a mishap when jump starting before the test, when turned on the dash was reading 140mph, 8000rpm, a full tank (that's when I definitely knew there was something wrong) and for every 100 yards driven the mileometer was going up 50 miles! Anyway, sourced a used set of clocks on eBay, arrived and popped them in (5 minute job). All working and back to normal. Only thing is the mileage is obviously now incorrect. Can this be altered, or just leave as is?
