Locking flywheel - Ben - 08-04-2017

Currently trying to replace cambelt on my rallye (although it's an early 6 engine) and am struggling to find where to lock the flywheel off. I've got a locking tool with 4 teeth and a slotted bit for a bolt to go through. I can get it through the top of the gearbox just to the right of the starter motor but there is no hole in the box to line up with the slot in the tool..

Thinking of removing starter and using one of its mounting bolt holes, but I've not read anywhere about having to remove this so wondering if I've missed something?

Thanks

I never bother with that, stick a sturdy screwdriver in to wedge it whilst you undo the bolt, then align the crank so you can get the pin in, they don't move on their own afterwards.

Thanks for the reply. Do you mean stick a screwdriver through the rectangular inspection hole next to starter motor? And I've not found a timing pin hole in the fly? Can't use the pulley as its spun on the rubber..

there's a hole at the back iirc.

you can line up the woodruff key with the base line of the block if the pulley is shagged.

Thanks for that, I've done it like that now, just wasn't sure about using a screwdriver on just one tooth to loosen bolt. Belt etc off now ready to fit new tomorrow. Think I'll order an alloy pulley as most seem to recommend them, is the lynx one worth the extra money over the bbm one? I believe it's coated whereas the bbm isn't?

theyre all a bit shit when its damp, you have to pull the belt so tight to stop them slipping

for a road car I'd just use a standard one tbh

RE: Locking flywheel - Ben - 09-04-2017

It's predominantly a track car, but even so I may go standard then if they have a tendency to slip.

there is no timing hole in the gti6/rallye 2.0 flywheel. As i came to realise!

RE: Locking flywheel - Stef205 - 09-04-2017

oh yes there is!

Not in mine

Unless it locks from a different hole in the block?

RE: Locking flywheel - welshpug - 09-04-2017

nope, never seen one, ever.

what I'd imagine stef has encountered is one of the balancing holes has happened to be in a vague location corresponding to a non existent timing hole that the XU engines never ever had...

RE: Locking flywheel - Piggy - 09-04-2017

Guna say... Thought I was going mad

RE: Locking flywheel - Stef205 - 09-04-2017

my gti6 had one, my 205 has one, the hdi does the 106 gti does as does many others ive put belts on.

been doing it this way for years with no issues, not my picture but a 6mm pin fits fine.

RE: Locking flywheel - Piggy - 09-04-2017

HDi/XUD of course does...as does TU stuff. But I PERSONALLY have never found one on a xu engine.

Hence me using dial gauge to find tdc1/4. As proof... When we were working out why the 16v hdi wasnt starting, ruan checked timing and we thought I'd been a muppet and got it badly out of time... Then remembered the gti6 flywheel I am using has no timing hole... lol #latenightfail

RE: Locking flywheel - welshpug - 09-04-2017

tu is designed to have one, xud and dw.

never xu.
