'Ultrabooks' Help - lewisdmz - 19-05-2012

Right my trusty Toshiba is on her last legs, reformatted about 3 months ago and already everything is becoming painfully slow. Can barely run Firefox, Chrome and iTunes at the same time. Battery life once unplugged is ~7mins as well. ThumbsUp

I don't do any gaming but always have loads of tabs open, itunes, photoshop with large RAW files etc so I think an ultrabook will be more than sufficient in terms of performance. I also really like the idea of the SSD HD's.

The Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook has caught my eye but I know Toshiba and other also have similar options.

Anyone had any experience of any of the above?

Re: 'Ultrabooks' Help - declantg - 19-05-2012

Personally i would get a custom built PC.

They work out so much cheaper than what you would pay for the equivalent laptop.

This is if your happy with a desktop

Re: 'Ultrabooks' Help - 4WayDiablo - 19-05-2012

Why firefox and chrome?

Re: 'Ultrabooks' Help - Eeyore - 19-05-2012

4WayDiablo Wrote:Why firefox and chrome?

chrome is alright for day to day browsing as it has all your favourites and the quick launch stuff where as
firefox is good for porn as you can set it to delete all your data on exit. Confusedhhh:

Don't have the space for a desktop otherwise it is without a doubt the better option. Need something I can use on the sofa etc.

"ctrl" + "shift" + "n" gets you a new private browsing window in Chrome which does the same Wink

WTF!? Mac books are awesome, all apples products are! I have an iMac, Mac book, iPad & and iPhone they're the best.

PC's are just big, ugly, bulky break all the time, Microsoft crappy windows crashing, stealing all of apples OS ideas and saying they came up with it rubbish!!!!!

Re: 'Ultrabooks' Help - declantg - 19-05-2012

Who said he had to run Windows on it? Wink

Could use linux which is free and in effect what a Mac runs on (all be it a bit of a bastardized verion of the same Kernel that Apple use) and don't require a million pounds* to acquire one Tongue they make good and PC's Laptops but they are expensive for what they are IMO! Don't even get me started on the iPhone lol

*cost may be slightly exaggerated for effect

Re: 'Ultrabooks' Help - Midnightclub - 19-05-2012

Agreed with mark! Imo... f*ck apple lol all this bollocks of them 'nicking' other people's ideas, and apple just rebrand old tech and say they invented it

Re: 'Ultrabooks' Help - declantg - 19-05-2012

To be fair here it Was windows that stole the whole OS with windows, folders, menu's etc and passed it off as their own, Apple were first with the whole "mainstream" PC thing and for many things (graphics editing being the main one) they are far superior to a windows computer and always have been and always will be, Their laptops and desktops are awesome bits of kit and I have nothing against them in that front other than the sheer cost, the iPhone on the other hand is just a well marketed out of date, poor excuse for a smart phone IMO

you can do that on chrome mate, hit 'ctrl' + shift + n = porn mode Smile

Re: 'Ultrabooks' Help - Niall - 20-05-2012

MacBook ftw but if you don't want to spend the money, get a laptop and put Linux of some sort on it. Windows 7 and 8 has proved tha windows has had its day!

^^ this 100% I would recommend Ubuntu if you choose the Linux route Big Grin

Re: 'Ultrabooks' Help - samass - 20-05-2012

Woop, another Ubuntu fan Big Grin
You running 10.xx LTS or 11.04? just wondering what you think of 11 really as I have the live disc but I'm not sure I like it lol

Re: 'Ultrabooks' Help - samass - 20-05-2012

cant rememeber off hand, its the netbook version tho. i think its 10.xx.
used to be big on win xp, but the ubuntu is so much faster and i've grown to be a huge fan of the layout. tis nice! as and when i can afford a better laptop ill be running it

Re: 'Ultrabooks' Help - Midnightclub - 20-05-2012

I don't think that windows is a better O/S by any means, it's shocking.. like most microsoft stuff tbh! But the PC hardware is what i prefer.. why pay £400 for 8GB of ram on a mac when you can get the same for nowhere near as much on a PC!

I do like ubuntu though, have been meaning to duel boot my desktop for ages

Fair play, why dual boot it though, just do a full install and be done with it! Unless you use your PC for gaming then there is nothing you can't do on Ubuntu you can do in Micofail windows Smile

There are also some damn good, free games which are available to download such as re-makes of quake and the like Wink

Re: 'Ultrabooks' Help - Fooby - 20-05-2012

Linux > windows /discussion

Any help on the original topic idea for lewis would be good :p

Because if something fecks up on windows i know how to fix it.. i don't want to be stranded with ubuntu lol

I'm just waiting for a decent Android O/S for PC's, i think that'll be epic!

Thing is your paying for the build quality. I've never seen any other laptop built as well as a MacBook pro/air and because apple make it, the hardware is designed for the software unlike with windows when you have got generic software for thousands of different components
Other thing is apple software doesn't take the computing power of apollo 13 to get to the start menu unlike windows so you don't need as much ram!

They aren't even built THAT well though, working where i do you get hundreds of calls per day of people calling about faults they have with there machines, apple isn't any more or less prone to faults, the design may go for good build quality but they're still built in china at the end of the day Wink

I do agree with the software built to match the hardware though but that's also what makes them so damn expensive!
