So looking at getting another motor: needs to be able tow 1500kg
Can't be too big either
Options at the moment are:

Freelander 2
Discovery 3
Any other ideas?

Mondeo, vectra, saabs etc can tow 1800kg.. Cheaper running aswell?

5 series, e34 1800 kg, e39 2000 kg towing weights, E34 mam is 2000 kg so you can put 1500 kg behind it on a normal licence.
trouble with the bigger things is that without a towing licence you will not be able to tow much regardless of the capacity of the vehicle.

One of the reasons I got the Vectra is mam of 2000kg caravan 1500kg so I can tow legally on my licence.

BMWs have been mentioned but I'd imagine anything with the 3.0 diesel engine is going to be a pretty decent tow car. Welshpug mentioned the earlier 5 series too

If you need a 4x4 I've heard good things about Kia Sorreno's. Considerably cheaper than a Landrover ect. Just make sure the rear diff oil is changed regularly.

I wouldn't touch anything LR with a barge pole, absolute money pits.
You 100% need a trailer test with a horse box, especially with any horses in it!

Just get a landrover, theres a damn good reason they are renowned worldwide and hold their value like only a landrover does.
Disco 3 tdv6 is a good shout but heavy on juice, tyres etc etc probably be just as easier to save some cash and get a late disco 2?

The only thing you'd be able to tow on a standard license driving a disco 3 would be a tiny box trailer! 2.5tonne!!!

Just as renowned for reliabilty issues.
They are the boss off-road mind, but probably excessive for just a horse box in a slightly muddy field, especially since it would mean Ginge would need to get a towing licence.

without breaking the bank, LWB Grand vitara 2.0TD (the slightly rounder one), HDi 110 16valve engine so you know it's reliable, full hi/low range and selectable 4wd/2wd,

watch out for the auto hubs if they are the vac operated ones on the front, simple fix for about £30 to put some manual ones on for added economy..
2002-2005 have a 1600kg towing capacity, and a kerb weight of 1527kg.
the XL7 which is slightly larger but strangely lighter is weighted at 1450kg kerb weight and can tow 1850kg..
For something larger but older, look for a Ssanyong Musso.. they run on Merc Gwagon running gear with the OM diesel engine so absolutely bomb proof. Gear linkages are an issue but *i think* you can upgrade these from another vehicle (dont quote me)

Most of the 4x4s you'll be looking at have a gross weight in excess of 2.5T meaning that the max you'll be able to tow is just 1 tonne and no horse boxes are plated that low so you won't be able to tow it.
Remember that legally the weight is the plated gross (max) weight of the trailer and the plated gross (max) weight of the vehicle.
If you don't want to do a towing test then something like a 406 is your best bet for max towing weight as they gross at just shy of 2 tonne and have a 1.5tonne towing weight so you could tow a trailer plated up to 1.5 tonne.
Other option is to buy a transit sized horse box as they tend to be drivable on a standard license with 2 horses in

Hardly, Jeeps are appalling, whereas landcruisers are one of the most indestructible and capable 4x4s on the market. Jeep is a brand vs Landcruiser is a model. Jap vs US. I could go on but i think you get the point.
