Road noise? - carlukepeugeot - 02-06-2016

Hey all,

Just getting started now on asking loads of questions after getting my ph2 Dturbo. I'm a terrible 'listener' always looking for noises. I notice that this car has one, which I don't remember hearing on my old xldt. Now this car has a much quieter engine than the old one, so maybe it was there and I just couldn't hear it..... I had a cone filter on the old one, and the thing was just LOUD.

Anyway, the noise in question sort of sounds like road noise, comes from the front left. Like the sound you would get if you had a bongo drum and just continuosly tapped your fingers on it gently. One of those things that if the radio is off, you can really home in on it. Just did discs / pads, track rod end, and it had a new balljoint just before I bought it and also a ARB drop link. When I was working on it, I checked for any play anywhere, and couldn't find any.

Anyone else find a sort of light drumming type road noise coming off the front?  Due new tyres in the next few days, the ones on it are very old and a bit cracked - might be a bad tyre I guess. I have also tapped the front spring, and it makes a similar frequency sound, wondered if it might just be road vibrations travelling up into the spring.

Could maybe be a wheel bearing? Does the sound correlate to road speed or engine speed, and does it get worse the faster you go?

It's weird, it is gone by about 65 mph. Not there until about 25mph. It doesn't have a 'tone' to it, just a sort of drumming sound - but not a knocking. Definitely correlates to road surface -if the surface is smooth it's barely there, if the surface is rough - and by rough I don't mean potholey, rather if it is one of those roads that is like stones set into the tar - it's more noticeable. I'm really starting to think it is just road noise being picked up by some part of the suspension or body and transmitting into the cabin. New tyres planned for the weekend, so I'll see if that helps. Had a good check of everything again tonight, including testing the P bushes using a tyre wrench on a wheel nut to try to push the wheel about, and they seem fine - no movement.

Just an update on this. The noise was actually being caused by the tyre. Just bought the car recently and the tyres were all a bit crap. No wheel balance issues or any sign of actual damage, however having got 4 new tyres, this noise has gone, and a braking judder at precisely (weird!) 35 mph has also gone. Must have been something amiss with them!
