Driveshaft seal replacement - Matt - 29-03-2016
Right the seal on my n/s driveshaft is leaking.
How do I go about replacing this, that driveshaft just pulls out doesn't it?
And removing and fitting of a new seal, any tips or tricks?
Driveshaft seal replacement - bashbarnard - 29-03-2016
Remove driveshaft nut, undo bottom ball joint, lever down lower arm. Pop driveshaft down then pop shaft out of box. Use a falt blade screwdriver to pry out the old seal (will be tight) knock in new seal using the old seal as a drift. Make sure its square. Bolt up in reverse order. Top up gearbox oil or do g/box oil change while youre there. Go for a drive

Pretty sure you have to leave the seal so it's proud of the housing (about a 1mm or so), not flush.

Yeah that drive just pulls out, you can take note of how the old seal sits not that it really matters. I usually flick them out with a pry bar just be carefully and don't push it in to far a mark the housing, tap the new seal in with something like a bit socket, tap it in even and square.

Drive shaft nut?
hub nut, big fo nut on the end of the drive shaft - 35mm socket required, and better off with a 3/4inch socket if you've got a set (snapped a few 1/2inch on these)

I'm getting someone to do it for me as I won't have time this week. £35 and he is using pug oil too at £16 he's charging f*ck all tbh

To add to this rather than starting a new thread: can you re-use driveshaft seals if swapping driveshafts or do they then generally just leak? Mine do not currently leak at all.

Yes you can re use them if they are in good condition, just be careful when removing and fitting the shaft so you don't pinch the seal.
Also when fitting the new one, you do not knock them in all the way. They need to be flush with the face of the metal. In fact, the genuine pug ones are slightly deeper so will drift in all the way and still be flush if not ever so slightly proud.

Seems to be luck whether they seal again or not. I've had some leak after refitting shafts which is annoying but most have been ok. If the 'box is out for a clutch change I change them anyway though.

I popped a driveshaft out once and it didn't leak when I put it back in.
I guess I'll give it a go and see.
