Anyone tried this fuel system cleaner? - BiG K - 10-02-2016

As we all know, our HDi engines are getting OLD, so I came across this article:

http://www2.le.ac.uk/departments/engineering/people/academic-staff/aldo-rona/research/technology-development/internal-combustion-engines/fuel-system-cleaning-fluid-for-hdi-diesel-car-and-van-engines

Fantastic, not only is this product tested in laboratory conditions, it was actually tested on a 2l HDi! Bingo, except I have no idea what product was used....

So I did a bit of digging around and found this: http://www.hollandalexander.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Media-release-MONEY-SAVING-FUEL-PRODUCT-GOES-ON-SALE-AS-PRICES-SOAR.-HA22.08.2012.pdf

Which of course is this product:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CLEAN-DRIVE-Car-Fuel-Valve-Injectors-DPF-Lambda-Sensor-Cleaner-cleandrive-/262045722774?hash=item3d03246896:g:dvgAAOSw~uhUo-zt

So has anyone use Clean Drive on their HDi?

Looks interesting, might have to research this, makes a change to see some reviewed published lab quality research that isn't biased by the company selling the peoductr

Reckon it would be worth a try?

RE: Anyone tried this fuel system cleaner? - zx_volcane - 11-02-2016

University students develops new product with funding from the 'innovation partnership'

University publishes summary seeming to show that it works to improve mpg

Patents product and puts it on sale with fancy press release

Hmmmmmmm

Besides £20 for up to 6% improved mpg for up to 3 months - dependant on what milage that equates to, not sure its even cost effective.

RE: Anyone tried this fuel system cleaner? - Poodle - 11-02-2016

Exactly as above tbh, plus it was tested on the european driving cycle - the same system that produces the bullshit emissions and mpg figures for modern cars. Just another redex imo.

RE: Anyone tried this fuel system cleaner? - pro_steve - 11-02-2016

I actually worked for this project to get their engine running. The way they conducted the before and after tests were not in any way comparable, and the product is not good to put in your fuel system. That's all I will say.

RE: Anyone tried this fuel system cleaner? - welshpug - 11-02-2016

I would imagine it'd be akin to running HDI on petrol, not advisable, and you can imagine how detrimental to HP diesel pumps and injectors that is.

if your injectors are tired get new ones, or get yours rebuilt.

says it all then!

did we mention the product by name? clean drive i think, or was it cleandrive. review of clean drive, is clean drive actually any good? ...etc

Go on let out the secrets Wink what sort of stuff would cause issues?

RE: Anyone tried this fuel system cleaner? - Poodle - 11-02-2016

He can't share the information due to industrial espionage laws and stuff like that, most researchers on commercial projects have to sign confidentiality agreements.

RE: Anyone tried this fuel system cleaner? - JTaylor2005 - 11-02-2016

Seems a bit of a bummer that he has revealed the only bits he needs to to stop people wanting to try it already and then you can't get the techie bits. Oh well haha

RE: Anyone tried this fuel system cleaner? - Toms306 - 11-02-2016

Adding a bit of 2 stroke seems to be more beneficial than anything else... I'm fairly sure even that's just placebo though.

would this be an alternative?

no.

Well judging by Pro Steve's statement, I wouldn't try it on my HDi then! The "research" did seem a bit suspect as I noticed a typo on there Undecided

The European Driving Cycle isn't too bad in itself per se, it's more the manufacturers have found sneaky ways to exploit the flaws for their own gain. Peugeot state 54mpg for our 306 HDi's, over 100k miles, I have gotten 56mpg! (over 40k was with a remap too but full disclosure - injectors were all replaced for new ones 50k ago)

I'll just use Esso Premium Diesel now and again, apparently the difference is the fuel contains double the amount of detergents and I have noticed an improvement to engine running smoothness atleast. When I bought the car, it was fantastic on fuel, I filled up with some dodgy fuel and my mpg has never been the same since Undecided

Go ahead and try it then. Or do the research yourself, either way will get the result you want, it'll just require some actual work from you. Tongue

Fair point, but then it is seriously out of date, especially considering the massive advances in engine and control technology in the last couple of decades. Hmmm, I think i might be wandering off topic a bit here though lol...

Not going to lie I wouldn't have thought it would be out there on the open web to even be researched if it was so confidential that Pro-steve couldn't tell anyone but hey-ho.  Blush

RE: Anyone tried this fuel system cleaner? - Poodle - 12-02-2016

Have you looked? Also, have you heard what they say about assuming? Wink

RE: Anyone tried this fuel system cleaner? - Dum-Dum - 13-02-2016

Read the first 2 lines of it and wouldn't touch it. They tested it on a 2000cc HDi when we all know these engines are 1997cc if they can't even get minor facts right then there is no chance on the rest of it.
