Cams!!?? - Beany58 - 04-01-2016 Evening all! Im looking at changing the cam/s in my gti6 and after reading previous posts iv not a clue what to do for the best. Obviously im after the most duration and lift my engine will allow although piston machining isnt out of the question. The head has been skimmed although im not sure by how much. Iv also read that someone on here does regrinds??! Who and to what spec are they? My car has jenvey 48's on standard management. Any help/advice would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance! RE: Cams!!?? - welshpug - 04-01-2016 48's are a bit big for a standard lump, you need yo be going 100 bhp more than a standard engine to need them! as for cams, have a look on the gti6 forum, there's a long thread about csms. RE: Cams!!?? - adam b - 04-01-2016 How did you get on using the standard management? I'm looking to do something similar at the moment RE: Cams!!?? - miles - 04-01-2016 be careful without checking the clearance, So pretty much re-grinds or the first offering of Cat or Kent etc RE: Cams!!?? - Beany58 - 04-01-2016 (04-01-2016, 09:00 PM)welshpug Wrote: 48's are a bit big for a standard lump, you need yo be going 100 bhp more than a standard engine to need them! Its too late now as they're on. Mapped and running nice. Yeah iv read the thread, it was you who started it about 5 years back if im correct. Is piston pocketing ideal or is it best just to get pistons at the same time, go with an aggressive cam and turn the revs up? I dont really want to plough a load of money into the engine tho with rods and everything else. Whats the most that can be taken off the pistons safely? How do i get hold of the guy who does cam regrinds? (04-01-2016, 11:06 PM)adam b Wrote: How did you get on using the standard management? Iv read all the tollerances needed. Who's the regrind guy and how do i contact him? RE: Cams!!?? - welshpug - 04-01-2016 piper and kent do regrinds, and newman I believe, pistons can have an extra 1mm of clearance added, bridgecraft engineering for that. with a decent set of rods and pistons (circa £1200) and the right cam, you wont need many more revs than a standard engine RE: Cams!!?? - Beany58 - 05-01-2016 (04-01-2016, 11:56 PM)welshpug Wrote: piper and kent do regrinds, and newman I believe, pistons can have an extra 1mm of clearance added, bridgecraft engineering for that. Topman thanks! Ill get onto bridgecraft see what they can do for me. Think ill get the pistons pocketed and see what cam i can get in after. It already revs to about 7200, would you keep it at that then? RE: Cams!!?? - welshpug - 05-01-2016 standard peak power is at 6500, not sure where it goes with ITB's, not much beyond 7 if the limiter was set to 7200, on PH2's and 45's mine was set to 7700, so I( guess peak was around 74-7500. The hp graph showed it still pulling at 7200, i guess its safe ish there. I take it you had to modify your pistons to get them cams in? 7700!? Standard rods? Arp's? Uprated springs/lifters? What sort of power do you get? Sorry about the thousand questions! ![]() RE: Cams!!?? - adam b - 05-01-2016 Interesting. Our engine builder in work wouldn't go over 7400 on standard lifters. I know of someone running a Standard GTi with a limiter at 8K. Its driven hard and never had any issues lol RE: Cams!!?? - welshpug - 05-01-2016 certainly not recommended for race use etc, but fine for a road car. engine is standard bar modified pistons and cams, arps arent worth the money, they have double springs as standard, standard oe gasket and bearings RE: Cams!!?? - adam b - 05-01-2016 So why did they reduce the rev limit? Serious question... It's not necessarily harmful but valve bounce / float just means it won't work all that well. And the guy really does know what he's talking about ![]() RE: Cams!!?? - welshpug - 05-01-2016 not sure really, but yeah I dont think most engines with hydraulic tappets dont like more than 7500 for too long. Deep in the strawberry patch revving to 8k! Brave man!! RE: Cams!!?? - welshpug - 05-01-2016 utterly pointless given they peak at 6.5k! I think ill prob just sort the pistons, arp's, put whatever cam i can get in there and turn it up a touch! Id like to see high 2's but i havent got the wallet to back it up! Iv also read you can put a slightly longer crank in but would i need custom pistons then or would 6 pistons go in with modifications? Theres so much you can do i just dont know whats best! I should have just brought a gt30 and pistons!? ![]() RE: Cams!!?? - welshpug - 05-01-2016 im not revving high! standard bolts are fine, if uprating I'd go to a decent bolt like carillo. you can't go longer stroke on the standard pistons, they come up to the deck and have a small dish. RE: Cams!!?? - Beany58 - 06-01-2016 (05-01-2016, 10:50 PM)welshpug Wrote: im not revving high! Thanks for the advise anyways. Ill have a think about what im gonna do. Might end up selling the bods and go turbo if iv got to buy pistons for a daft cam. ![]() RE: Cams!!?? - welshpug - 07-01-2016 you have to buy more than pistons and rods if you go beyond say a PH2, you need valve springs too. RE: Cams!!?? - Beany58 - 08-01-2016 (07-01-2016, 10:02 AM)welshpug Wrote: you have to buy more than pistons and rods if you go beyond say a PH2, you need valve springs too. Been mulling things over and iv decided to have a Peter Taylor regrind on the inlet. Gonna get it sent next week. Been trying to contact Wayne but no joy as yet? You know of anyone else who's able to tweak the standard management or will it be ok? Iv already got a wideband to keep a eye on things?? RE: Cams!!?? - DemonDriverDan - 08-01-2016 I've git Piper BP270H with pocketed pistons and no clearance issues. I think I can go a little bit more lift if I wanted to but the engine made 203bhp with 45mm throttle bodies so I'm fairly happy RE: Cams!!?? - twangy - 08-01-2016 putting pt81 cams with vernier pulleys , pocketing pistons , and also fully lightening and balancing , also running 45 jenveys and mapable ecu , and comp exhaust , so hoping to see the 200bhp mark RE: Cams!!?? - Beany58 - 08-01-2016 As long as i get around 200bhp ill be pretty happy as id like to get a slightly shorter final drive eventually which will make it feel faster anyways. Imo the standard box is too long! Ill prob get the flywheel lightened at the same time. Unless you fancy spending £900 or so from Spoox! RE: Cams!!?? - welshpug - 09-01-2016 plenty of 5 speed shorter fd's available from std boxes ![]() RE: Cams!!?? - adam b - 09-01-2016 Bloody loads out there ![]() RE: Cams!!?? - welshpug - 09-01-2016 just never a 4.4 be3! If all else fails that might be the only way! ![]() RE: Cams!!?? - twangy - 10-01-2016 i use a 5 speed box in mine with c/r and 4,4 cwp , better lock , lighter , and more cwp available , how many times are you hitting 6 gear on track ? |
