Cheaper alternative to go pro? - Matt - 28-12-2015

im after a go pro. But without the price tag. I know you get what you pay for, I've seen some 1080p go pro style cameras for as little as £17. Obviously these are going to be shit and not worth the money at all.
But is there something cheaper and worth it?

I want it for recording drives, track time, video reviews etc
So need something with a good mic and able to film in hd/1080
External memory is a plus

RE: Cheaper alternative to go pro? - Frosty - 28-12-2015

Me and Mr fish bought a SJ cam earlier in the year which seems pretty good. We went for the slightly more expensive 1 which is the SJ 4000 i think. Think it was around the £50/60 mark. Been pretty impressed with it, we got a proper go pro mount for it to stick on the cars though that we used at pugfest this year

I've got a drift hd for the bike, was £70 refurbed with 1 year warranty, really good clarity etc

RE: Cheaper alternative to go pro? - Niall - 28-12-2015

In all fairness Matt i know you're on a budget but there are some cracking deals on GoPros at the moment in the sales. Have a look around!

RE: Cheaper alternative to go pro? - Matt - 28-12-2015

Yeah I'm trying to have a look about. I just don't want to spend to much on it as I don't know how much I'll actually use it.

Where would you recommend looking for one?

RE: Cheaper alternative to go pro? - Niall - 28-12-2015

Amazon. I picked up a Hero 4 Session on there boxing day for £100 but that was with a £20 voucher work gave me. Just have a good look around. Motorsport shops, water sport shops etc

RE: Cheaper alternative to go pro? - WiNgNuTz - 28-12-2015

I got the SJCam SJ4000 for Christmas, about £50-60 as mentioned above, and side by side, pretty close quality wise to the go pro. Most of the gopro gear fits the SJ as well. Wink

EDIT: Just read your post properly, the SJ4000 does do 1080p, but only at 30FPS, so I've got mine recording at 720p at 60FPS, and it does have external memory, up to 32Gb iirc. Smile

Another thumbs up for the SJ4000. I have the WIFI edition & it's awesome. All the same mounts as the GoPro, works great.

Here's my SJ4000 in a suction mount when I had the 309.

RE: Cheaper alternative to go pro? - WiNgNuTz - 28-12-2015

I decided against the Wifi edition, as it's a feature I am unlikely to use anyway, but even that's only an extra £10 or so. Wink

RE: Cheaper alternative to go pro? - swampy - 28-12-2015

Hmm I'm looking at something like this to record bits of my drive to Italy and back next year

RE: Cheaper alternative to go pro? - Piggy - 28-12-2015

SJ here too.
Mine was £40 new.
Careful you dont buy the SJ copy which is junk.
Quality seems same as gopro in my eyes and you get more features...plus you can buy a lot of them for the cost of one gopro!

RE: Cheaper alternative to go pro? - Eeyore - 28-12-2015

i use a gopro hero 3 black edition for the quadcopter and film work. However I would highly recommend the SJ 4000. make sure you get a genuine as there are lots of fakes. They are very good and i was very impressed by piggys which i used at action day.

RE: Cheaper alternative to go pro? - WiNgNuTz - 28-12-2015

Yeah, that's a good call tbh, be VERY vigilant to make sure you get a genuine one if you do go with the SJ4000, there are hundreds of fakes out there, and its very easy to end up with one! The fake ones are utter garbage, if you decide to go with the SJ, feel free to let me know and I'll send you the link I used for mine. Well, the one I WOULD have used if I'd bought it myself. Wink

I'm sure any of the other members that have recommended them will happily do the same though. Smile

RE: Cheaper alternative to go pro? - 1616six - 28-12-2015

I got a fake by mistake & it was terrible, sent it back and found a genuine one. Can't remember the seller on eBay but if you google it you'll find it easy enough.

RE: Cheaper alternative to go pro? - 7057sam - 28-12-2015

Niall still got his forsale ??

Heard some very good things from the sj4000 though, could brought 3 for the price of the 4

RE: Cheaper alternative to go pro? - 1616six - 28-12-2015

just found it, foxoffer is the company that sell 100% genuine. They come from abroad but mine literally took 3-4 days to arrive.

RE: Cheaper alternative to go pro? - Choppin - 28-12-2015

Another for the SJ, got the lil M10 wifi as mainly wanted it for a dash cam and it's been perfect, not massively great sound quality but everything else has been just as good if not better than my friends gopro's, fookin tiny compared to the usual GoPro style cameras as well

RE: Cheaper alternative to go pro? - Dum-Dum - 28-12-2015

Another vote for the SJ4000 here.

It's cross compatible with go pro mounts too.

RE: Cheaper alternative to go pro? - welshpug - 28-12-2015

wifi feature on the gopro is great, as there's no screen you can set it up much easier, transfering files on the fly too.

only downside is battery life, but in a car you can solve that with a long usb lead.

RE: Cheaper alternative to go pro? - Matt - 29-12-2015

Think I'm going to go for a sj4000 I've seen sj6000 on eBay, but looking at them all there is litterally no way to tell if it's a fake or not by just looking.

Anyone got a link to the sj?

I wanted a GoPro but looked around and can only find them for £170+ as I'd want a hero 3

RE: Cheaper alternative to go pro? - Matt - 29-12-2015

Now I need a micro sd! What size is recommended, looking at 32gb, what will that hold video wise?

RE: Cheaper alternative to go pro? - Niall - 29-12-2015

Get on Amazon Matt. They are doing great deals on class 10 Samsung cards. I bought a 64gb one the other day for £12.
