hi all,
is there a simple way to check the working of this unit as a pre-winter job?
what parts would need replacing if it's not working?

Test light on them when engines cold. Start car they should be on. If not you have a fault. As for knowing if the glow plugs are working in there you can be a pikey and flash a live to them. If it sparks theyre working. If not take them out and test by which time you may as well just replace them.

Where is this water pre-heater and what does it do? Will it help to clear the windows quicker in a steamed up car?

according to all I've looked up, l/h end of block roughly below battery/airbox.
supposed to warm up the coolant into the heater matrix.

The glow plugs are 15 years old...pretty sure they'll all be knackered anyway.
Think I saw Paul used XUD plugs as a straight swap.It sits on top of the gearbox as you say, just whip out the airbox to access.

Looking at the electrical diagram in the Haynes manual there are what looks like 2 glow plugs. Each seem to be controlled by a separate signal from the ECU. One from pin 85 which is a yellow cable and one from 58 which is beige. There then should be a white cable and a brown cable going to the glow plugs from the relays. And then 2 pink cables that look like they come from the relay and should be 12v when in the second key position.
It all looks very confusing tbf haha.

There are four plugs, i did some playing a few months ago and found xud ones fit. None of the motor factors near me were able to get hold of the original plugs that came out of it and peugeot will only sell it as a whole unit for a ridiculous price (best part of £200 iirc). The unit sits on top of the gearbox under the standard intake pipe.
You'll know if it's working because you'll have hot air from the heaters within a minute or so of starting and the car will get up to running temperature within five minutes. Actually makes a significant difference to efficiency, worth fixing imo. If it's not working test it as Bash suggests above.

That sounds like it would be lovely tbf. Mine is still blowing lightly warm air about 5 minutes into driving at least usually.

That's right, the glowies the 1.9 xud engine uses for the cylinder head. The ones jtaylor has linked look right. Tbh if they're the same thread and physically fit without fouling anything they'll do fine, only thing i'd be cautious of is putting anything too highly powered in. The xud ones are fine, only pull about 5amps more than the standard items iirc.

I haven't come across any siezed in so far, not like engine plugs. A bit of penetrating fluid wouldn't hurt though.

They ain't a major part of starting the engine so I can't see why a cheaper set would be a problem. Also what with them being cooled by the water and not living in a cylinder head they will probably have a much easier life anyway.

Get some bosch duraterms, the coolant plug cycle on and off constantly even when the engine is up to temp, they spend most of their life on

They simply cycle on for 30 seconds then off for a few then back on for 30 seconds constantly regardless of all other conditions. They remain on even when the car is up to operating temperature. They are controlled by the two relays in the black box behind the ecu (two plugs per relay) and are separate to the engine glow plugs. They do help with clearing the windscreen but I have never seen a car heat up in less than 15 mins with them working away full blast so their effect is not as amazing as people think.
also they are NOT 1.9 glow plugs iirc

Interesting, i wonder what it is that made those cars heat up so much quicker then, i'll have to do some more testing.
The standard glow plugs aren't from a 1.9, but even my local bosch specialist couldn't supply the original items and the dt ones are a close fit and similar power.

The best thing for clearing the windscreen is air con.... But probably not on a 306.
Heated screen is epic this time of year though, literally takes seconds to clear in the morning with it on.

No way!? How did you manage that? Most of them seemed to have broken under warranty when I look through history on them haha.
