gas lift garage door?? - Magenta Sunset - 10-10-2015

just an idea that popped into my head 1/2hr ago.

my current garage door is an up-n-over type, about 40+yrs old, with concrete counter balances on pulley wires.
some years back, there were a few break-ins in the block, doors being bent open from the bottom etc.
luckily mine wasn't. however for peace of mind, I reinforced the vulnerable sections, resulting in a heavier door.
this then necessitated adding weight to the counter-balances. now as the door ages even more, it is starting to pull out some of the pivot plate's rivets.

so, long story short, to 'do away' with all the old mechanism, install some gas struts, and hinge the door from the top edge. (Would make a useful canopy too) ninja
