Fan switch - Matt - 03-10-2015

Went to change the fan switch and it turns out I've ordered the wrong one, the new one has 2 contacts where the old one has 3?

What is the centre connection for? And can I fit this one?
I need the rallye ready for mot on Monday, but they can't do emissions and as fans don't kick in until about 110c+. Is that normal? Anything I can do?

RE: Fan switch - welshpug - 03-10-2015

2 pin is 1 speed, 3 pin is 2 speed.

go to motorfactor on way to mot.

RE: Fan switch - Matt - 03-10-2015

Ahh shit, it's not that easy on the Isle of Wight haha, closest one is 7miles! What temperature should the fans kick in?

RE: Fan switch - vincent1 - 03-10-2015

This may help

Just bridge over it for the mot test. Factor ones don't last long from experience

RE: Fan switch - Matt - 03-10-2015

How would I bridge it? I know how to do something with aircon but this doesn't have it

RE: Fan switch - vincent1 - 03-10-2015

maybe test the fans to make sure both speeds work

RE: Fan switch - Matt - 03-10-2015

Just to note my doesn't have a brown sensor as is a rallye. I have a sensor in the rad which controls the fans. Is the plug bridgeable so I could put it a switch attached to two wires and the to the switch. Use the switch to close bridge when I want them on?

RE: Fan switch - vincent1 - 03-10-2015

ive done that on various cars in the past as a tempory measure so should be fine although im not sure which ones to bridge on a thre terminal one.

RE: Fan switch - adam b - 03-10-2015

Think it's the outer two. Well it works on my bastard of a car!

We tested this ;  and the fans kicked in, but would that help for 2 speed?

Matt's fans do kick in, but at higher temp, no lower temp kick in

RE: Fan switch - adam b - 04-10-2015

The fuses and relays on the fan cowling ok? Bridging it kicks in low speed

We bridged and it kicked in.

But the fans don't actually kick in on their own until nearer 110

RE: Fan switch - welshpug - 04-10-2015

low fan should be sufficient, obvious symptoms of failing thermoswitch if it'll run with the pins bridged, if ut didnt then youll have a failed resistor.

RE: Fan switch - Matt - 04-10-2015

Thermoswitch being the one on the rad? That's the one I ordered the wrong one of haha but yeah fans come on just a little to late

I'd keep it as it is, especially as it's getting colder anyway... get it on the road! Big Grin

RE: Fan switch - Matt - 04-10-2015

Yeah but I can't mot it as they think it's overheating and won't do emissions on it haha

Plus with my hand in cast, putting wheels and a exhaust is gunna prove difficult haha

RE: Fan switch - welshpug - 04-10-2015

youll just have to wait then!

RE: Fan switch - Matt - 04-10-2015

Sorted wheels and exhaust, fan switch I can't test as I now have a problem with the idle :/

did you unplug the ICV - see if it made any difference?

RE: Fan switch - Matt - 05-10-2015

Got side tracked yesterday. And it was pissing it down today so doing it tomorrow morning

RE: Fan switch - Chr1sch - 07-10-2015

Mine is a normal 6 and i have the same issue - will run when bridged but i only have the high speed fan that works like you. Really interested to see if you solve this as mine has been like it for 18 months

RE: Fan switch - Matt - 07-10-2015

Just needs a new switch.
Is yours the switch that is in the rad?
Going to bridge it to get it through the mot.
Anyone know which pins to bridge?
