Career opportunities - bashbarnard - 30-04-2015 So basically I've been in the trade near as dam 10 years now. I enjoy it but I feel I've reached where I can reach. Im looking into changing direction a bit. Far from this instance, at this time I am happy with my current employer he is a star. Willing to train but I feel as though I want to corporate two of my hobbies. Cars and computers. Any suggestions? Training courses for said suggestions. Cad design for bits? Im not sure I'm open to suggestions. RE: Career opportunities - Niall - 30-04-2015 Why don't you look at moving to a dealership? Working in dealerships can lead to a lot more opportunities if you're good enough! RE: Career opportunities - bashbarnard - 30-04-2015 I worked in dealers for 7 out of the 10 years. I moved to an independent to get away from the treatment you get there. One of the best moves I've ever made. I got all the certificates and the equivalent"master tech" with my first lot. Already done just not for me. Just to add the reason I am still currently at my current job is the people i work with. Everyone including the boss is good RE: Career opportunities - Toms306 - 30-04-2015 Remapping... RE: Career opportunities - bashbarnard - 30-04-2015 Thought about it. A lot of people out there doing this. If I was to branch out into this area I would like to work for a specialist company that doesn't just bang generic maps on. Id also want\need some description of training. Willing to learn though. RE: Career opportunities - Toms306 - 30-04-2015 Sounds good. Rolling road and remapping, set up your own company in Ipswich, would get loads of trade! You could always employ me to sweep up as well... RE: Career opportunities - bashbarnard - 30-04-2015 I would need training first man. No one localish to do such things. I could make some phone calls and see if anyone's able to help. RE: Career opportunities - Toms306 - 30-04-2015 Nothing's gonna be instant though, whatever you change to will take time and training. Just gotta decide what you prefer doing I guess. RE: Career opportunities - bashbarnard - 30-04-2015 Of course. Im not the sort of person to expect things to be handed to me. I want to learn a new skill to add to my skillset I already have. RE: Career opportunities - Dum-Dum - 30-04-2015 Own business could be the way forward and from there branch out into tuning RE: Career opportunities - Iceman299 - 30-04-2015 Looked into automotive/motorsport engineering? Depending on how many toilet breaks you're allowed, eh? RE: Career opportunities - bashbarnard - 30-04-2015 Automotive engineering sounds right up my street. Where do I sign...... Seriously though how do I get into something like that. RE: Career opportunities - Iceman299 - 30-04-2015 (30-04-2015, 06:08 PM)bashbarnard Wrote: Automotive engineering sounds right up my street. Where do I sign...... University is the main route. But you'd need a levels in maths as a minimum. Could always search for any apprentiship positions in the area Just google it, you'll find plenty of info RE: Career opportunities - bashbarnard - 30-04-2015 Fair enough. I think ill have a look and see what I can conjure up. Defiantly cant afford uni due to the fact I have a house and child to support. Could always find out rough course fees etc and save up to do it in a few years time RE: Career opportunities - bashbarnard - 30-04-2015 I could. I do agree it is worth looking into though. I'll take a look tonight and see what's available out there. RE: Career opportunities - Orta - 30-04-2015 I've often wanted to change career but I'm stuck as to change direction is most likely have to take a pay cut and I just can't afford to! Besides I have Zero talent for anything so that severely restricts my chances! I say if you can afford to make the change to something you enjoy, then do it! I've always wanted the freedom of owning my own business so go that route if u can! RE: Career opportunities - Iceman299 - 30-04-2015 I'm back at college doing motor vehicle after 12 years in retail management. If you're seriously thinking about/wanting to change career just do it, rather than have regrets later on and being stuck in a job you don't enjoy. I'm planning on doing plumbing and electric courses next while im back into studying lol RE: Career opportunities - bashbarnard - 30-04-2015 Id love to own my own business. Eventually though. Another house time as well once we have a bit more money. Its not so much a career change its more diversifying what I already do. You only live once. Im going to start planning and enquiring about changes over the next few weeks. RE: Career opportunities - Eeyore - 30-04-2015 For mapping youd have to be doing custom rolling road stuff. Its not like Mr WHippy or Pro Steve live off selling hdi maps to people. Id love to have my own business so if you think you can do it give it a go! RE: Career opportunities - RetroPug - 01-05-2015 I am an automotive engineer, feel free to PM me with any questions or to discuss if you like. RE: Career opportunities - Poodle - 01-05-2015 I'd look into in car computer systems - like scangauge or vbox, but custom. Highly sought after and there's big money in it if you want to go that way. Thanks retro pug. I'll message you tonight about a few things. Scangauge and vbox. No idea will also look into it. RE: Career opportunities - RetroPug - 02-05-2015 I can use VBOX. Who is making big money out of it and how do I be them? How do I save myself? How have u managed to afford it? What's the secret? RE: Career opportunities - bashbarnard - 02-05-2015 As he says. If you want something bad enough you go out and do it. That's what I'm like. Screw the money (to an extent) you cant take it with you. RE: Career opportunities - Poodle - 02-05-2015 (02-05-2015, 08:17 AM)RetroPug Wrote: I can use VBOX. Who is making big money out of it and how do I be them? Designing and making the software and hardware which vbox sell. Orta, retail management money isn't great, but it's really not the worst. I managed to change career from a supervisory position (and paycheque), sure you've got to cut down your unnecessary spending and have a boring couple of years, but you'd be surprised at how much you don't miss. I'm rapidly heading towards being a qualified mechanic, took a couple of months of chasing possible jobs, but eventually found a place willing to train me up. |
