om606 - talk me out of it! - n0v0s - 17-04-2012 As far as i can see, the om606 is basically quite a diesel deity.. It can run waste oil (has an m-pump) It can run stupid power (400bhp is childsplay) on stock internals without even opening the motor An e-class w210 can be picked up for peanuts It's m-pump does'nt face the fuel problems with high revs that a ve pump does so swap the valve springs and rev away! The ghey auto-tragic can be changed out to a stronger manual box - quite a few options avail here, with a suitable merc flywheel machined to suit a 340mm clutch and a e34 sachs pressure plate to handle the absolutely stupid torque levels. 7.5mm elements are around £400 shipped, on the standard electronic pump - don't really required the anal setting up on a special bench as gov is all electronic etc. Should be good for 450bhp with a hx40! Costwise, A cosworth box is about £200 on ebay, elements £400, holset £200, chopped prop £100?? clutch/pplate £300/400?? Then another £300 for misc/cooler/piping.. Chip - £100? How realistic are my prices? With my rose tinted specs, it seems a good idea over my dturd but the costs mount up ^ My thought process currently is 400bhp+ ...costs...400bhp...costs... ............powaaaa! So yeah, DISCUSS ![]() Re: om606 - talk me out of it! - mark_airey - 17-04-2012 Why would I want to talk you out of it, buy one and start a damn project thread............... There is a merc in the local scrappy with a 606 in that I keep looking at ![]() Re: om606 - talk me out of it! - Ruan - 18-04-2012 Essentially it's not that easy with the pump, the electronic system is too coarse with 7.5mm elements, it'll be nigh on undriveable... You'll be looking at a mechanical 603 pump and then changing the elements - don't assume you'll be able to set up an M pump on the car, it's nigh on impossible, because you have control of the governor in both directions, it's a balancing act all the time, unlike a VE, it means with ANY adjustment to the pump, you'll end up screwing the governor and ending in it hunting like a twat, blowing coal, and it's 50000000x more sensitive with 7.5mm elements... Put it this way, if you do it yourself, it'll NEVER pass an MOT. You'd be wanting a Myna or similar pump, remember also they have NO dynamic timing adjust, other than if you get one with the centrifugal timing gear, ALDA is wank and usually ends up being sacked off for a boost actuator on the stop lever. From what I've heard, the trannies aren't that simple, if you're wanging 400hp through it, you're talking 500lb.ft of torque, not even cosseh boxes will take that, you'll just pull all the teeth of all the gears. Clutches - you'd need something custom and probably multiplate. Re: om606 - talk me out of it! - con67 - 18-04-2012 The actual car it is in is an utter bucket of shoite, rust everywhere including at the rear where it cant be seen, every single part seems to cost 4 times more than a pug, the canbus wiring diagram (thats the wires that connect the ecus together, nothing else) is more complicated than all the wiring on most cars that age, they dont drive very sporty at all regardless of power like comfotable but boring, drink diesel unless on a m/way or A road, the board computer......dear god what an annoyance, auto only and to top it all off mine tried to kill me by a random codeless limp mode when overtaking at high speed (limp shut the engine OFF COMPLETELY in my cdi). I actually got my cdi after looking for months for a 300 and paid over the odds for the fsh 'low' amount of rust etc. I'm sure there'll be more when I remember, now got an e39 5 series and tbh with nowhere the power/toys etc and even worse mpg is 100 times the 'driving' car. If you want an om606 then for me it has to be all mechanical retrofit into a much older (read better) merc. edit: after a re-read make that 100000 times the driving car.......... edit2: the fuckin cd player doesnt play cdrs/rws etc aftermarket head units just dont sound the same on the upgraded sound system Re: om606 - talk me out of it! - darrenjlobb - 18-04-2012 Only way fowards here is a 190 with a 606/605, with a naughty mech pump on it and set of twins involving a hx45 and a vnt. But to do all that, involves buying about 3 cars just to get hold of a pump, gearbox, engine, and suitable car...and then you start buying engine bits and realise a gasket is same price as an engine for a 306 ![]() Get on it tho, epicwintbh, but avoid ecu's, why ruin an epic pump with an ecu! Re: om606 - talk me out of it! - n0v0s - 18-04-2012 From what i can gather, the electronic pump will push good power with a diy element swap. It has the same potential as a mechanical pump with regards to outright fueling. A chap in NI, got his electronic pumped om605 shy of 400bhp with just a chip, turbo and diy swapped 7.5mm with <5.5k rpm. Granted, when he got the pump properly calibrated, it made more but..400bhp!? I wouldn't exactly be complaining! This would be a commuter car for me. I can imagine how bollox a w210 must be as i found my relatively 'sporty' 330d boring quite quickly.. But I am going to start by sourcing a low milleage om606, cat c w210 on the cheap and run that on waste oil. I don't have much time this summer to piss about with a full blown project just yet so i'll run it on the limit of the stock autobox/turbo/pump and when it gives up i'll get spending and crank up the boooost! It'l be a nice commuter for uni and hopefully should run on waste oil better than a ve due to the better pump design/suitability. In practice, i know things always end up costing more than planned... so if a milder 350bhp tune means cheaper oem clutches and box then i'd be content. Better get searching ![]() Re: om606 - talk me out of it! - darrenjlobb - 18-04-2012 Yeh but remember, a 400hp bus of a merc, would probs be no more fun to drive than a 150-200hp pug...and mension a corner, and deffo not.... Re: om606 - talk me out of it! - Dan! - 18-04-2012 Simple solution, OM606 + pug........... ![]() Re: om606 - talk me out of it! - n0v0s - 18-04-2012 *sigh* Ahh Darren, feck off! ![]() The novelty of a barge tastic m3 eater though would probably last for a few months! Even if it means rolling it on a slight bend! You're absolutely right though bud! I know deep down that it would make so much more sense to just stick it in an e30 straight off seing as prop would be custom anyway... might as well get a few mounts sorted and drop it in a worthy shell! But then if i'm going to make a proper go of it, i'd kick myself for not going m52 turbo purely for the bwarrrrppp factor! The only way i can fully commit to a full on om606 project is once i've taken the 306 to completion with the new snail i have waiting for it otherwise i'll always regret it! Can't help but think that old merc is suited to drifting, the weight must help with keeping momentum. I'd love to see that on a track, sick bags at the ready! haha Re: om606 - talk me out of it! - mark_airey - 18-04-2012 Have a look at their youtube channel ![]() Re: om606 - talk me out of it! - mark_airey - 19-04-2012 Re: om606 - talk me out of it! - darrenjlobb - 19-04-2012 That car is alot of win, twin blown 606 in a win beemer, listen to that eaton whine its arse off ![]() Re: om606 - talk me out of it! - mark_airey - 19-04-2012 darrenjlobb Wrote:That car is alot of win, twin blown 606 in a win beemer, listen to that eaton whine its arse off Its an entire car full of WIN IMO ![]() |
