Clutch change - Slam Wagon - 27-08-2014

Any guides or advice etc for swapping a clutch? Any bits i might have missed? Clutch set, gear box oil, clutch cable and shaft seals. Think thats it, got axle stands and a couple of jacks and a clutch alignment tool.

An extra pair of hands is alway helpful when lining the release bearing up when putting the box back on.

Also some penetrating fluid to help get the pin out the clutch arm

May also want to change the fork bushes whilst you're changing everything else.

Second this. Well worth doing. The old ones wear out and allow a bit of play in the shaft (giggidy) and can also stick slightly giving a notchy gear change. They are about £3 from Pug each.

Make sure they are genuine Pug ones though.

I have had two different 'OEM quality' aftermarket versions now. They are a tiny bit too big, so pinch the fork arm giving a stiffer clutch.

Oh and also another point with the bushes. When you remove the shaft to replace the bushes, clean the ends up with some sand paper but do not use any grease in the new bearings. They are teflon so don't need any grease or copper slip which could even cause more of an issue!

Not sure of the quality of those, but a fair price if they're decent.

I've used the Bilstein ones a few times now which seem better than OE tbh.

I'll get some from pug Smile should I get gearbox oil from them as well?

You'll need both the shaft seals and the 2 bearings, and best to get the oil from pug

Can find you the part numbers from when I did mine if you like

Yes get genuine gearbox oil. These boxes are really picky with their oils.The genuine stuff is about £12 for 2 litres so hardly expensive.I know the 6 speed box takes 2.1 litres but its not a problem with just 2

Gear oil is 9730 AA...I know that from memory now lol! Confused

You need two seals, both of the ones I linked, clearly they're having a stock issue with the smaller one though, hence the price lol, so you'll have to go for some others if you're doing it asap. The dealers were quite expensive for the seals though.

Those are the pug seals for a gti, don't know what car you've got?

As far as I'm aware all drive shaft seal are the same for all 306 gearboxes and quite a few of other peugeots like 106s and 206s and prob a few more.

I'm guessing it's for as Xud though as that's what section it's in? Smile

Only needed for XUD boxes.

Hdi clutches are MUCH easier!!!

Doing it on an XUD, nathans to be precise but ive only done one clutch swap before and that was when my engine was out and access was nice and easy and all seals and fluids etc were being done anyway.

Plenty of WD40/equvilient and a good pair of molegrips.

Failing that, bit pikey but just bend the clutch arm up just enough to get it to swing back around, then deal with on the floor.

Assuming the pin is the same as the GTi6 one, Rowell and I didn't have any issues with his one! They give you plenty to grip, not like trying to remove the pin from a HDi box to change the fork bushes! Confused

The one on mine was an absolute pig and that was with the engine out lol
