Andyyy's 1.9 DT 205 Cherry Red VNT - andyyy - 26-07-2014

So the 205 siezed up 70 miles away from home and left me stranded

So promptly ripped the engine out (in a local car park lol) and found out that it was actually a 1.7 DT after being sold as a 1.9 DT

Then decided that whilst it was all apart it needed a respray some random photos need to find some better before and afters as these are all part way through

[Image: IMG_20140614_162736017_HDR_zps4uye02vz.jpg]

Got a new engine and stripped it down

Started building it up again with ARP head bolts and hdi rods

Then bought a GT2052 and stripped it replaced the chra and clocked the turbo

Also had the actuator apart so it will run off boost

Started makeing a exhaust manifold

There's loads more pictures of things but seems pretty photo intensive soo I'll leave them out still loads to do so should be plenty of updates

Shaping up to be a hellish project, good work Smile

Looks great! Best of luck with it.

Thanks guys will look into getting 11mm pump Smile

Haven't been able to do as much as I'd like today due to my daily causing me some issues and deciding to clean the workshop as it was a state but did manage to clean up and paint the sump and fit the water pump

Looking very promising bud....keen to see this finished!

You ever have a 'chat' with the guy who sold it to you as a 1.9??

i didnt know they done a 1.7 ??

RE: 1.9 DT 205 GTI cherry red - Piggy - 27-07-2014

Actually known as a 1.8td but a xud7 officially

Thanks I'm keen to see it done also !

Yeah I had a chat and he explained that it was actually his brothers car he had it to get running but couldnt and his brother was sold it as a 1.9 also lol I only bought it due to it being dirt cheap and bled the fuel lines and it fired right up like a good un !

So couldn't really get any cash back he also works next door to me and I borrow stuff off him all the time so would make things awkard if I had a go

I was more interested as to how everyone came to believe including me that it was a 1.9 tbh

Yeah your right everyone calls them 1.8s well except me but then I don't get why the 1.7s are called 1.8s and the 1.9s aren't 2l's its the same logic of its nearly one but maybe its just me

RE: 1.9 DT 205 GTI cherry red - Piggy - 27-07-2014

Well the 1.9s are 1905cc iirc and the xud7 is something like 1760ish. So does make sense...sort of.

To be fair, its easy to spot the diff between the 1.9/1.7 visually if you know what ya looking at

RE: 1.9 DT 205 GTI cherry red - andyyy - 27-07-2014

Ahh I thought the 1.9 was more than that just checked and im wrong and stand corrected lol

Yeah I always thought something was slightly off but I guess I just trusted that he was right other than stamp I don't think I would of known tbh

Its rounded up or down which ever is closest, So they are 1.8 and 1.9 :-)

RE: 1.9 DT 205 GTI cherry red - Piggy - 27-07-2014

Thats what I explained!? Confused

sorry just you wrote 1.7 and 1.9 again, ive never heard of anyone calling them a 1.7 before lol

RE: 1.9 DT 205 GTI cherry red - Piggy - 27-07-2014

I know but he is referring to it as a 1.7 so just helping him along...

Plus its often referred to as the 1.7 in older citroens etc on thr continent

My XUD workshop manual refers to then as 1.7 as well main reason I do tbh

Anyway no progress today but have found photos of the car the day I bought it

If anyone knows the thread I have a pipe threader and could possibly make one up

RE: 1.9 DT 205 GTI cherry red - andyyy - 29-07-2014

Just checked and don't have the right size thread cutter for the pipe threader so unless someone makes these I'll have to get one made up

RE: 1.9 DT 205 GTI cherry red - aggyj17 - 30-07-2014

Get rid of the standard cooler and you might be able to use that fitting?

RE: 1.9 DT 205 GTI cherry red - Piggy - 30-07-2014

You need to keep the standard cooler as it helps with warm up time and heat balance ec...Ruan explained it all once

So you need another bolt which has female and male threads to bolt the cooler plate ontop of the current fitted one ThumbsUp

On a 306 maybe, but on a 205 when the cooling system is already pretty marginal with a TD engine (especially if it's not running the expensive thicker core TD rad!) it's not exactly ideal using a heat exchanger to dump more heat into the cooling system.

Yes, ideally you'd have a heat exchanger to help bring the oil up to temperature quicker and to stabilise temperatures, but not at the expense of reaching the limit of the cooling system with an engine that's so sensitive to cooling issues.

Not only that, but on a 205 the clearance between the 306 style heat exchanger and radiator isn't great and you normally have to run a short Renault oil filter to give a decent amount of clearance - if you tried adding a take off plate for an oil cooler as well then I don't think you'd manage to fit the oil filter on! Remember the 205 engine bay is considerably shorter at the front than a 306, hence needing to tilt the radiator forward when running GTi-6 engines etc.

Personally, I'd remove the heat exchanger and if you think oil temperature will be an issue then fit a thermostatically controlled oil cooler (which that take off plate doesn't appear to be) to keep the oil temperature sensible without over-cooling or excessively prolonging warm-up time.

RE: 1.9 DT 205 GTI cherry red - andyyy - 30-07-2014

I'd like to run both if nothing else there will be more coolant in the system (and oil)

Cooling shouldnt be an issue as I'm ordering this off eBay Link

It is thermostatic but the plate isn't there is a remote oil filter with a thermostatic part inside it (or so I'm told) so will be running two oil filters

Where would I buy a female to male adaptor tried my local hydrolics place where i get my oil lines and brake lines from and they didn't have anything like it don't think its really there sort of thing

If there still will be cooling issues I'd rather fix them than bodge by removing the oil cooler so maybe I should run a 70c stat if I can find one and make the cooling fans come in sooner ? Say at 80c rather than 90c as before
