Bad times...now what? - my-first-306 - 04-07-2014

hi all

my 306 is smoking blue smoke really bad and im sure its the turbo, what is the best direct bolt on turbo for the hdi? are 110bhp turbos any different?

cheers
steve

Very bad times...rather you than me!

There isn't another bolt on turbo, you can fit other turbo's but they will all need modding a bit. The 110 uses the same turbo, just a different map and an intercooler.

If you use the 110 turbo be sure to change the waste gate actuator before fitting. Yours works off pressure, the other works off of vacuum.

Depends what your plans are, I would stick to standard unless your planning on tuning it over 150hp. Smile

bit random it only started smoking after I done the earth mod on the airflow wiring, I have since unplugged it and its gradually getting less smokey?

oh well hopefully I wont have to change it lol

RE: Bad times...now what? - Poodle - 06-07-2014

Dead maf perhaps then, any chance of getting it on diagnostics?

RE: Bad times...now what? - my-first-306 - 06-07-2014

yeah I think its just a dead maf, it starts lumpy and isn't very responsive when ya put ya foot down, need to get another one but they are too expensive for a good quality one

RE: Bad times...now what? - Toms306 - 06-07-2014

If its a bad MAF it should be black smoke, not blue!

True, BUT sometimes diesel can make blue smoke, I think its if its only unburnt? Where as black is partially? Or is it the other way around lol

RE: Bad times...now what? - Toms306 - 06-07-2014

White is unburnt diesel (start an XUD without glowplugs lol).
Black is partially burnt diesel (overfuelling from a bad MAF or not enough air from a boost leak or similar usually)

I wasn't aware diesel could ever make blue smoke but I'm happy to be proved wrong. Smile

RE: Bad times...now what? - Seb_Ryan - 06-07-2014

Ever stared an xud up with the fuel pump timing out? Blue smoke, stinks and burns your eyes lol

RE: Bad times...now what? - my-first-306 - 07-07-2014

sorry I should of said I run a 50/50 mix of diesel/used engine oil so mine smokes blue not black lol

RE: Bad times...now what? - Poodle - 08-07-2014

In an HDi?? Just lol...

*awaits "my car won't start" thread*

Nope, but I don't see how that'd be blue, should be white! That's not proof either, just words. Tongue

Oh god. Confused

In that case, the smoke is the least of your worries. lol

RE: Bad times...now what? - Danny2009 - 08-07-2014

I bet that engine oil is dying the cherryade

RE: Bad times...now what? - my-first-306 - 08-07-2014

nope I mix it with white, mixing it 50/50 means it costs half the price so why not, it runs spot on

"Runs spot on"

Sure... Why not try just run it on pure derv and see if the problem goes away?

Rofl Rofl Rofl

You know burning oil makes blue smoke, right? That's brightened my day right up, blokes at work are creasing good and proper. lmao

RE: Bad times...now what? - toseland - 08-07-2014

i see no problem here!

RE: Bad times...now what? - Jonny81191 - 08-07-2014

Just to point out, you will wreck the fuel system like that. HDi's won't even run veg oil. You'll find the seals give out, with veg it's to do with the acids in it. With oil, it's due to the contaminants in it from being run in an engine. The filters will also struggle with the crap in the oil. It's also down to the viscosity of the fuel, it's just too thick to run in a common rail fuel system even mixed with 50% diesel.

So yeah, dump the tank and get some pump diesel in there. A can of injector cleaner will possibly help, and a new good quality fuel filter. It might just save it if this has only just started. Look around on here at peoples issues running alternative fuel... there's quite a few threads where people have struggled with even red diesel.

RE: Bad times...now what? - Ruan - 08-07-2014

Well, that's another entire Commonrail system totally f*cked!

EFA lol

RE: Bad times...now what? - my-first-306 - 09-07-2014

well tbh I have run it on anything I could get hold of for the last 20,000 miles and not had a problem, other than a bit of smoke, which I have now put down to using clean engine oil not used stuff, all these horror stories you hear are rubbish, me and my mates all run cheap diesels and run them on pure shit and they all keep going Smile

only thing my hdi doesn't like is red diesel, but engine oil, veg oil, sunflower oil, gearbox oil, used chip fat etc it loves, each to there own but 306's are old and cheap as chips so if it goes bang throw it away and get another one lol

RE: Bad times...now what? - Poodle - 09-07-2014

No horror stories here, just plenty of experience of people daft enough to run it on crap who then come to us for help when it goes wrong. Wink

It's your car, do what you like with it, but if you post about smoking problems when you're running it on used oil you will get trolled. Funnily enough... Rofl

RE: Bad times...now what? - my-first-306 - 09-07-2014

well funny enough it was the new oil I used that made it smoke, so ill stick to used from now on lol

P.S if you have injector tick oil works wonders to keep them quiet Wink

RE: Bad times...now what? - Toms306 - 09-07-2014

It'll do wonders for all engine noise soon enough... Wink

What do your fuel filters look like out of interest? lol

RE: Bad times...now what? - my-first-306 - 09-07-2014

the one in the tank is mint, the one under the bonnet probably not very nice as ive only changed it once lol

RE: Bad times...now what? - Seb_Ryan - 09-07-2014

Why would you use new engine oil? Which is at least 2 quid a litre? Hmm..

RE: Bad times...now what? - bashbarnard - 09-07-2014

Why would you put used engine oil in!! Hdi WILL die. Just a matter of time.

RE: Bad times...now what? - my-first-306 - 09-07-2014

I got given the new stuff from a friend who said it was the wrong grade for his car, I don't mind driving ticking time bombs, its not like its a expensive car to replace lol
