Popping out of Gear??? - Ari - 16-05-2014

Need some help. Drove up to Warwickshire today but on way back 30 or so miles from home it's started popping out of 3rd Gear and I think it also popped out of 2nd once. It stays in for a while but just goes back into neutral when it feels like it. It may be partly down to the road surface but I can not be sure. Also seems to be a slight whining, gear box giving up? It's done 157k and I had the clutch replaced end of last year. Any ideas folks Huh

RE: Popping out of Gear??? - mcglynn - 16-05-2014

could well be worn linkages mate, that would be my guess.

RE: Popping out of Gear??? - Ari - 17-05-2014

Well process of elimination I suppose rather spend money on linkage than another gear box + labour.

Have you checked the gearbox oil?

RE: Popping out of Gear??? - Matt - 17-05-2014

Linkages and oil would be my first shot, then it's probably new gearbox time :/

RE: Popping out of Gear??? - Ari - 18-05-2014

How do you check oil? It was changed same time as Clutch I believe.

RE: Popping out of Gear??? - mattyh24hdi - 18-05-2014

Your gear oil should be fine ari your clutch was only done couple of months ago. But worth trying linkages I think.

RE: Popping out of Gear??? - Ari - 18-05-2014

Linkages won't be causing whinning though surely? It is quite oily around the gear box so could be leaking? I can't really see to look.

RE: Popping out of Gear??? - mattyh24hdi - 18-05-2014

Ah right I didn't read your first comment properly. I wouldn't have thought so. But oily gearbox doesn't sound good mate Confused

Popping out of Gear??? - Sambarker - 18-05-2014

There is a plug on the side which is used to check level.
Or alternatively, Drain the oil and refill with the right amount of fresh oil

RE: Popping out of Gear??? - madmadmax - 18-05-2014

should be 1.9l of oil in the box so if less than that comes out you have found your problem

RE: Popping out of Gear??? - Ari - 19-05-2014

Right ok might need some help doing that lol never touched a gear box before. I assume I can just use tranmission fluid from halfords, no different to any other trans fluid all the same so I've been told in the past? Bought linkages so that is something I won't need to worry about again at least.

Edit: as I thought the gear box oil wasn't changed when clutch was done so the seals won't have been done either Sad

RE: Popping out of Gear??? - mattyh24hdi - 20-05-2014

Maybe gearbox seals mate. Also there are lots of gearbox oil grades like engine oil so make sure you get the correct one if you do.

RE: Popping out of Gear??? - powerandtorque - 20-05-2014

Use proper Total/Esso BV 75W80 gear oil from Peugeot - BE gearboxes are quite fussy about oil.

I have used 10/40 gear oil in all my gearboxes for the last 7 years and never had any issues

RE: Popping out of Gear??? - welshpug - 20-05-2014

O_o

I certainly would not recommend that!

Popping out of Gear??? - Sambarker - 20-05-2014

All I'm saying is any suitable gearbox will be fine in my experience, no point really using Oem oil unless you really want to

RE: Popping out of Gear??? - powerandtorque - 20-05-2014

Given that the OE oil from Peugeot is roughly the same price as Halfords stuff on trade, let alone retail, why wouldn't you use the correct stuff?

that is some shockingly bad advice from a member that should know better, these gearboxes NEED the correct Peugeot oil!

RE: Popping out of Gear??? - Seb_Ryan - 20-05-2014

I gotta be honest I used 75 80 from factors and never had no problems in 100k..

RE: Popping out of Gear??? - miles - 20-05-2014

Well this old one, If you look at the old data you sometimes see 10/40 recommended and a gearbox I had from a so called gearbox reconditioner's said the same or the warranty would be invalid, But if you do use 10/40 the box will not last having seen the remains when people do, The old XY engine's are OK as the box is in the sump like a Mini.
Popping out of gear will either be box bearings or torque bush, Linkages just tend to fall off as the std ones cannot be adjusted

It wasn't advice, just my own experience.

So they changed the clutch without dropping the 'box oil...? Interesting... Hmm

They just put the old stuff back in id say, pretty common practise unfortunately

RE: Popping out of Gear??? - Ari - 21-05-2014

When I had the clutch done by Pug on my '6 they changed the oil seals etc. I took the hdi to a garage my mate worked at along with his wife and father in law just to save 120 quid or so... Kind of wish I'd just taken it to Pug now. The whinning is pretty horrendous so I'd just as we'll replace it. I was considering selling the car as spares but I'd only end up buying something else on the cheap or wait ages for something better.

RE: Popping out of Gear??? - Ari - 24-05-2014

Doesn't pop out of 3rd anymore or hasn't last few days of driving. it whines a little bit so I might just keep driving it for now, if It lets go then i'll just worry about it then.
