Suspension Top-Mounts - necessary? - C.A.R. - 24-02-2014

In the midst of replacing my front shocks and stocking up on the bits, I've bought some replacement top mount thrust bearings but not new top mounts. Is it really worth replacing them? There's nothing visually wrong with the ones I have.

I assume that the thrust bearing seats itself into the bottom of the top mount, so is it going to give me a headache getting the old bearings out if I want to re-use the top mounts?

Just seems like an extra expense I could avoid as I'm a bit of a pikey like that.

As long as when you get it apart, the top mounts are still free and not falling apart, should be fine to carry on. I dropped the front legs off the other day and swapped my top mount bearings to the new struts.

That's what I'm hoping. But assuming these have never been changed, they've done 120k+ miles and may not show any visible signs of deformation, they could be knackered underneath!

It just seems like another ~£50 each to spend!

Hmmm its a tough one, may just have to have a set on standby just incase? then take them back if you don't need them.

Good chance that if they aren't 'clonking' as you turn the wheel, they could be OK.

No need to change them if there ok.
