Major boost leak - checked usual culprits - n0v0s - 11-03-2012

Was driving enthusiatically last week, and while on full boost @3k ish rpm (~25/30psi in 3rd) i was greeted by a sound resembling a burst in a pipe. Was like a burst of pressure being released 'ppsshhh'

Now, when i plant my foot, it makes a noise that i can only describe as.. errr.. someone moaning.. 'nooooooo' in a shrill high pitched noise in a geordie accent lol  , only as it approaches 15psi. Up until then at light throttle it is fine - no noise.

It's not the turbo. Next to no play, either radial or axial float.

It's not the D seal before all the eager beavers chime in.

I'm thinking it COULD be the inlet manifold gasket blowing?

It COULD also be (most likely?) a split in the turbo - intercooler pipe? As the noise it makes sounds like air reverbing through an opening on full boost.

Any opinions please?
Cheers.

if its that bad it should be easy to spot although you say it happened at peak boost id guess its popped off a hose?
have a look around the system, might very well be the turbo-ic pipe has popped off the turbo

No, thats the first thing i checked. It's still building boost and leaking it out simultaneously so i'm thinking it's down to a split in the pipe. Hard to check without taking pipe out as it only appears to leak, and hence make the noise, under boost, above 10/15psi :|

Before pulling the pipe i just wanted to see if a leaking gasket would give similiar problems?

I'd say the pipe straight off the turbo has a split happened to me it will open the split more on boost due to the pressure.

As everyone else has said, its unlikely to be the manifold gasket if its making that sort of noise (although the description of the noise made me laugh lol ) as said, its most likely to be either a split hose from the turbo or it has pushed the hose off the turbo as mine has done this a few times in the past!

I would check that the hose is fully on the turbo and if your sure that it is then I would remove it and check for splits Smile

am i the only one who also made the noises in my head, then changes the tone as reading along further into the sentence lol

but as everyone else said regarding the boost leak - also, keep the turbo/pipes clean where you're tightening them on - oily pipe are not good and will only encourage more slips.

Nah your not, I did too! lol

Sounds like you may have hit the cast of geordie shore and got one lodged under there.

haha! bit of received pronunciation should drive 'em out!

Had a ticking injector so i gave it some to clear it and can only assume i've now made the suspected split bigger as now it no longer makes the noise (thank fk! was driving down oap pedestrian numbers) rules out gasket, although i'm sure fumes are getting through from exh mani..

will take off pipe and check it out, cheers guys! Smile
