As the title, if you were suddenly able to travel back in time and given any amount of money, what car would you go and buy new?
And to make you think, it would be something you could realistically buy, like afford to insure, maintain etc with a steady income .
Think of it as if someone was buying you the car but you have to cover the costs of keeping and running it.
For me, I think it would be a Peugeot 405 t16x4. About as rare as they come these days and combines everything I like in a car, classic looks, brilliant engine, motorsport heritage, rarity, performance etc etc

There's plenty of exotica worth far more of course, but as a do-anything car, an E30 M3 is hard to beat.

Totally, you forget what a special car you buy these days for £800... There'll be a time they're NOT £800 for an OK one...
Enjoy it whilst it lasts - I have considered getting another just to keep and store, because we all know they will be as much of an unsung hero just like the Corrado VR6, 190E Cosworth, Manta GTE that are all worth a FORTUNE these days... It's just that Top Gear haven't yet said that the 306 GTi6 is a future classic...

A guy near me has a Manta Berlinetta and a mk1 Cavalier Coupe (not the Sports Hatch, the 2 door coupe), I've asked a few times but he will not sell them...

I still find it amazing that Peugeot could sell you a naturally aspirated 2l hatchback with near as dammit 170bhp and 6 speed gearbox wrapped up in a pretty hatch almost 20 years ago.
167bhp is still pretty impressive these days for a standard car

This. You've only got to look at the price of 205 GTi's these days as a good example - was only 5 years or so ago that you had free choice of good examples for sub-£1k and a few hundred quid would buy you something quite usable.
