clunk knocking sound - Whodafunk - 17-12-2013 When I'm manouvering slowly like a 3 point turn for example I have heard a loud clunk or knock as I turn the wheel. Could this be a drop link or anti roll bar? Can't say I've noticed it over bumps when driving RE: clunk knocking sound - Grant - 17-12-2013 Where from? The front? Drivers or passengers side? Middle? Does it do it whilst turning during regular driving? RE: clunk knocking sound - Whodafunk - 17-12-2013 Sorry from the front. Possibly front right. Not noticed it during driving RE: clunk knocking sound - Piggy - 17-12-2013 Sounds like coil spring broken or not seated right Or top mount/bearing perhaps RE: clunk knocking sound - Whodafunk - 17-12-2013 How can I check that? Is it a big job if it's that? RE: clunk knocking sound - Grant - 17-12-2013 (17-12-2013, 11:13 PM)Piggy Wrote: Sounds like coil spring broken or not seated right Or the p-bush Or the drop link Or the ball joint Or the TRE Or the ARB Bush It could be ann manner of things whodafunk. You really need to get under there with a pry bar and start moving things about to recreate the noise if possible. The best way of eliminating/diagnosing ![]() RE: clunk knocking sound - underground375 - 17-12-2013 Mine did this, turned out to be a knackered P bush of all things =\ RE: clunk knocking sound - Piggy - 17-12-2013 p bush is a good call... Be unlikely to be drop links/ARB unless turning on a uneven surface. TRE is not normally heard to make noise, same goes for ball joint. But get a torch and pry bar as said, and give it a good inspection. Try with it on ground and jacked up as it loads different parts RE: clunk knocking sound - Grant - 17-12-2013 (17-12-2013, 11:37 PM)Piggy Wrote: p bush is a good call... Dude, what are you on tonight?! Of course they are going to make noise if they're f*cked! My TRE's are currently knocking more than Peter North's bedside table... RE: clunk knocking sound - Tom - 18-12-2013 I had a knock over bumps, was bottom ball joint. It happens. Like had been said above, you might get underneath and your p Bush is flapping in the wind ! RE: clunk knocking sound - Piggy - 18-12-2013 But its a loud clunk only when turning stationary...not when driving RE: clunk knocking sound - Whodafunk - 18-12-2013 Yeah it's only when turning at slow speeds, like a 3 point turn. It's also pulling to the right aswell. Also how should the coils sit? The base of each front coil is uneven. Hard to describe but it's curved where the spring sits on it?? I've got it booked in my father-in-laws garage on Saturday to have a good look on the ramp. EDIT: Just reading this thread and my symptoms seem very similar... Maybe the coils need greasing http://306oc.co.uk/forum/thread-15519.html RE: clunk knocking sound - Whodafunk - 21-12-2013 Just had it up on the ramp and it's the drivers side spring. It's gone upwards and is resting on the turret. Anyone know a good place to buy coil springs from? RE: clunk knocking sound - Piggy - 21-12-2013 Dont mean to be big headed but.... Anyway. Is it a standard coil spring or uprated one?? Its best practice to do them in pairs RE: clunk knocking sound - Whodafunk - 21-12-2013 I know mate, you called it ![]() It's just a standard one. Found this on eBay... http://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/viewitem?itemId=330850295602&index=0&nav=WATCHING&nid=32432918074 RE: clunk knocking sound - Piggy - 21-12-2013 That would do it so long as yours is a hdi Worth trying your local factors...sometimes cheaper than you think. Also worth considering some second hand upratrd springs which often can be had for £30-40 for a pair and it is best to replace them in pairs RE: clunk knocking sound - Whodafunk - 21-12-2013 I'm gonna tackle the job myself so if I have any patience left I will do the other side. They're 35 quid for a pair on ebay with free postage. Will try local outlets on Monday though as my father in law gets trade discount. ALWAYS do suspension work in pairs! If your replacing one spring, make sure you do the other with the same brand. RE: clunk knocking sound - cully - 21-12-2013 a large clunk is normaly the money falling out your wallet but as said allready it could be any of the moving joints on the front best get your head in there and have a look RE: clunk knocking sound - Whodafunk - 21-12-2013 Already diagnosed it Cully... But thanks RE: clunk knocking sound - DazzaHDI - 25-12-2013 (21-12-2013, 06:32 PM)Whodafunk Wrote: Already diagnosed it Cully... But thanks What was it mate? As I'm getting this from both sides but I've got brand new shock absorbers(motor factors brand) , top mounts, tre's, drop links on both sides and a brand new driveshaft, wishbone on the n/s / passenger side So not sure 100% on where it's coming from :/ RE: clunk knocking sound - Piggy - 25-12-2013 (21-12-2013, 03:46 PM)Whodafunk Wrote: Just had it up on the ramp and it's the drivers side spring. Cheers piggy ![]() You in the festive mood today then? ![]() RE: clunk knocking sound - Piggy - 25-12-2013 Nope. RE: clunk knocking sound - Whodafunk - 03-01-2014 The broken coil.... ![]() The new coil... ![]() I replaced both sides, aswell as two new drop links. It's like driving a new car now and no pulling to the right ![]() Springs were Monroe (OE quality) from eBay. £19.95 a pair http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360643980456?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 RE: clunk knocking sound - Piggy - 03-01-2014 Nice job ![]() RE: clunk knocking sound - DazzaHDI - 06-01-2014 Now mine does not look like that! :O RE: clunk knocking sound - Grant - 06-01-2014 How the hell could you not realise it was like that?! Lol RE: clunk knocking sound - Whodafunk - 07-01-2014 I did realise, hence why I got it on a ramp and replaced them. To be fair it didn't make a noise most of the time, just occasionally on full lock. It was only slightly lower at that side as the coil was broke at the top. Anyway it's all done now |
