Centre hub nut (front) - Dean - 09-10-2013

Anyone know if these are normal thread or left hand thread being french n all.
IF its left hand thread i've managed to break a 1/2" power bar and an impact driver due to the french reverse thread...

RE: Centre hub nut (front) - Mattcheese31 - 09-10-2013

normal mate, they are a proper bastard to get off though, no doubt . .Big Grin

RE: Centre hub nut (front) - Connor - 09-10-2013

Nope normal thread, what youve done is broken your tools tightening it up

sod the hammer,

3/4 breaker bar + scaffold pole + body weight = job done

Tbh, I have come across one that wouldn't move with the breaker bar on the ground, Dumdum hitting the socket onto the hub with a BFO hammer and me trying to drive the car away, we tried heat, shock, buzz gun, everything. Ended up taking the whole hub off.

I broke a 1/2 inch 2 ft breaker bar, with a scaffy bar extension... and had my body weight on lol. I'll have another go tomorrow when my back recovers.

Good God - kill it, kill it with fire!

Thats pretty stupidly tight!

RE: Centre hub nut (front) - puglove - 09-10-2013

uhhh yeah if your changing the wheel bearing lots & lots & lots & lots & lots &lots of heat & a BFO bar.

If your not changing a wheel bearing then buy yourself a new wheel bearing and do the same lol

RE: Centre hub nut (front) - Dean - 09-10-2013

it is for the bearing lol. Its tight as (giggity.)

RE: Centre hub nut (front) - puglove - 09-10-2013

Get a decent blow torch and heat it for like 20 mins, was the only way i got mine off, clear any thing you dont want to damage with heat out the way, keep an eye on the CV make sure it dosnt get to hot. try to heat the nut more than the end of the shaft, job should be a goodun

RE: Centre hub nut (front) - Tom - 09-10-2013

Get it glowing red then try and shock it off and big hard yank instead of a massive lever.

RE: Centre hub nut (front) - Chris1357 - 10-10-2013

Sorry I didn't text you back mate, Didn't finish work until late!
You call that a bearing? I bet theres nothing left of it.
Chris

RE: Centre hub nut (front) - Dean - 11-10-2013

Well i got the nut off.... had to rent a impact driver from a tool hire place and got told
"if this takes off nuts on railways and iron girders, and wont take that nut off you can keep the impact driver..."

But yeah it did get it off, and after looking through the service history to see if it was done recently, the last wheel bearing change was in 2001, and done by Arriva (Bus company) so yeah, that will be why.

And yeah Chris there was 2 ball bearings missing when only the top half came out. I'll upload a picture.

RE: Centre hub nut (front) - Grant - 11-10-2013

Just FYI, buy a breaker bar next time. They're circa £20-30, probably the same or less than the hire of the gun. You can use it for so much more aswell, and you will own it Smile

I got mine on trade from Halfords for £15, never looked back

I snapped my 1/2" breaker bar Smile trying to get that f*cking nut off lol.

RE: Centre hub nut (front) - Grant - 11-10-2013

Lol fair, I should read threads properly then haha

RE: Centre hub nut (front) - C.A.R. - 11-10-2013

The Haynes book of lies has an interesting technique for this, which involves putting the spare wheel on, putting the socket through the hole in the centre of the wheel and doing it that way, with the car lowered back on the ground. Means you can get a bit more leverage.

Had to do both of my driveshafts this year, it's not a fun job. Fortunately for me both hub nuts came off without much of a fight...

RE: Centre hub nut (front) - Toms306 - 11-10-2013

For anyone wanting to try the above method...it doesn't work with swallows, the centre cap holes aren't quite big enough for the socket! Dodgy

Think it'd work with a steel, but I didn't have one. Impact gun worked anyway though lol, wasn't expensive either for the amount of use its had, was only £30 iirc, mains powered.

Yeah I had to rent one to get mine off, still took about 20 minutes of constant going to get it off.
And unfortunately I didn't have a steel to put on, and have cyclones so yeah, no removable centre cap

RE: Centre hub nut (front) - Toms306 - 11-10-2013

If you do a lot of suspension/steering/wheel swapping stuff, I'd recommend buying one tbh. They really are useful, surprised how much use and abuse mine gets tbh!

sod the hammer,

did this last weekend 2 with no blood loss

RE: Centre hub nut (front) - Poodle - 13-10-2013

If anyone down this way gets stuck i have a 3/4 bar with the appropriate socket on and a 6' scaffold pole, so feel free to drop me a pm. I've done about 20 hub nuts with it so far and haven't even had to exert myself yet lol.

This, simple but works. Get a free steel with a bald tyre just for this - we had one in the garage
