Roofskin - Grant - 01-10-2013

Right, I know the principles behind it. Windscreen out, drill the spot welds, but has anyone here actually removed and refitted a roof skin?

Want to put a non-sunroof one in mine, but am in two minds...

RE: Roofskin - Piggy - 01-10-2013

would it not be easier to 1) live with the sunroof
2) weld in a plate and fill/paint!?
3) fit a carbon roof! (WIN!)

RE: Roofskin - Grant - 01-10-2013

Well a carbon roof is what I was thinking. I have got a plate in place already, its the same as Jonny B's, just stuck on top of the roofskin.

I can't for love nor money find the business card of the bloke I was talking to about carbon roof skins Sad

this is the closest I could find...

RE: Roofskin - Piggy - 01-10-2013

at Mini world day last saturday there was a mini there with carbon floor pans, doors, roof, boot, boot floor, front wings/bonnet/grill etc.

amazballs.

RE: Roofskin - Grant - 01-10-2013

Any idea where from?

RE: Roofskin - Piggy - 01-10-2013

I duno mate...I would think mini bits are much easier to find!

RE: Roofskin - Midnightclub - 01-10-2013

What about that guy on here that had all those insane carbon bits? NUR motorsport or something.. username was Hovis iirc?

RE: Roofskin - Grant - 01-10-2013

I dont remember Hovis having carbon on his rally?

Maybe he did ?

After a snoop around NUR's website they only do tailgates, bonnets and spoilers for the 306 in carbon Sad

RE: Roofskin - Midnightclub - 01-10-2013

He had a couple of bits.. but i think he was the one posting that NUR thread up on here

EDIT: boom.. http://306oc.co.uk/forum/thread-8918.html?highlight=nur+motorsport

£400 for a carbon roof skin or £300 for a carbon kevlar roof skin, £200 for a fibre glass roof skin

RE: Roofskin - Scott - 01-10-2013

It wasn't Hovis that had the parts, he was selling on behalf of NUR though. They're only in Reading mate, not too far to pop down and see what they have Wink

RE: Roofskin - Grant - 01-10-2013

Danny, you are a hero, repped!

Scott, its a date! haha

Im guessing its just a case of adhering the carbon skin on then?

RE: Roofskin - Piggy - 01-10-2013

yeah with mega awesome epoxy resin.

seems expensive mind

RE: Roofskin - Midnightclub - 01-10-2013

No worries mate!

I'd imagine it'd just be bonded on yeah.. supposedly a new non-sunroof skin is about £150 new... so a fibreglass one isn't even much more expensive

RE: Roofskin - Grant - 01-10-2013

Carbon-kevlar is £300. That would probably be the one i'd be opting for TBF. Its just If I can get the roof skin off without removing the windscreen. would be nice lol

RE: Roofskin - Midnightclub - 01-10-2013

Ahhh fair enough!

From the thread i saw on 6 forum, they say that the windscreen has to be removed :/

RE: Roofskin - Grant - 01-10-2013

Thought as much. Might just punch the shit out of it, say an albatros hit it whilst driving through balham, then get a new one with a £75 excess ThumbsUp

RE: Roofskin - puglove - 01-10-2013

i thought the c/f f/g roof skins were a replacment not a cover bonded over the top ! iirc you still have to remove the old skin

You're meant to actually read the thread before posting J Tongue

RE: Roofskin - puglove - 01-10-2013

yeah my bad got the wrong end of the stick. thought grunt was talking about "bonding" it over the OE one. we know he aint the sharpest tool (or the longest gigity) so i just assumed lol

RE: Roofskin - Daniel306 - 01-10-2013

Im going to do it to a 205 soon

http://106owners.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?196661-205-gti-1-9-8v-bare-shell-resto

he did it, dose not look too hard

RE: Roofskin - Chris - 01-10-2013

I woundnt bother with nur as Ollie told me all the issues he had with getting the bits for his Dimma.

Streamline carbon do roofs, but I'm not sure if they only do them fitted or not.

RE: Roofskin - Dum-Dum - 01-10-2013

I reckon use windscreen bond to stick it on, if it holds the screen and that is structural then I don't see why it cant hold a structural roof skin.. You could stick your own windscreen in then too.

RE: Roofskin - Niall - 01-10-2013

Chris, Thats the stuff most people use when replacing roof skins. As said, it holds a windscreen which is structural. Just hope you never have to remove it! lol

RE: Roofskin - Grant - 01-10-2013

Bit of cheese wire, bobs your uncle!

RE: Roofskin - Niall - 01-10-2013

yeah...if you can get that round the lip that sits over the shell. Dont forget a windscreen just sits 'on' the body. The roof skin laps over.

RE: Roofskin - Grant - 01-10-2013

You've lost me. You're saying the roof skin laps over the windscreen?!

RE: Roofskin - Niall - 01-10-2013

No.

Ill explain next time i see you with various hand signals and objects on the pub table.

RE: Roofskin - Grant - 01-10-2013

Awesome. Better head down the toby tomorrow night for a refreshing beverage then!

RE: Roofskin - Jonny81191 - 01-10-2013

Grant, 100% the screen has to come out to remove the roof.
