Project Barge - Jonny81191 - 28-09-2013

Last Tuesday I went and swapped Linzi for a 406 HDi, I need a heavier car to tow the hillclimber with, and the 406 fitted the bill nicely!

It's a boggo spec HDi 90, and it's really comfortable, just wafts along in a very average manner. I'd never have one as an only car, it's too boring. But for commuting and motorways, it's very nice Big Grin

I doubled (literally) the performance last night, thought I'd check the air filter and found this under it. Removed it to be left with a normal paper filter and have been rewarded with the ability to accelerate!

There are some issues though, the rear suspension needs major adjustment, I don't think anything's actually broken, it's just been stuck together by someone who didn't understand what they were doing. Resulting in the rear tyres looking like this Angry

Also, I checked the ECU to be presented with this:

So I'm looking at other fuel delivery options, coupled with the intercooler off a 110 model. I'm not wanting big power, but 140 would be nice, especially as it'll be a towbus.

Seamen

RE: Project Barge - samass - 28-09-2013

Needs slammage

RE: Project Barge - Arron - 28-09-2013

The 406 is a nice drive isnt it! Loved by taxi drivers around here a few year back.

good workhorse

RE: Project Barge - Dum-Dum - 28-09-2013

So you swapped the white one for this? seems like a fair deal.

Needs 18s and slammage.

Also you cant have a tow car without powarrrrrrrrrr. It will make you cry if you start struggling on motorway hills

Re: Project Barge - Pete - 28-09-2013

Welcome to my world of gay Siemens ecu's! Nice car though. 406's are lovely, well built and refined old buses...my coupe feels half its age TBH

RE: Project Barge - Jonny81191 - 28-09-2013

Well I done some detective work today, and I've decided it's an ex taxi. Rear bolster wear, very clean superficially, horrendous elsewhere, holes for a cb radio, drivers wing peppered with marks like someone's been leaning on it, the boots clearly had some serious use. The list goes on! But yeah, it's a nice drive.

Also, am I right in saying that the seimens cr pump is also the lift pump? So no in tank pump.

RE: Project Barge - Ruan - 28-09-2013

Correct ^^ They should have a hand primer..

RE: Project Barge - Face. - 28-09-2013

Nice comfy motor.

Get the power upped and wear a flat cap whilst racing along Tongue.

RE: Project Barge - Jonny81191 - 28-09-2013

Ah, thought as much Ru, cheers.

Noo, that's all too tempting!!

The silver estate can be seen in the OP of this thread, she's in dry dock at the moment awaiting some suspension work/repairs Big Grin

Oh, and some moar boost.

RE: Project Barge - vtec power gt - 28-09-2013

Be interesting to see. How you go about tuning this as from what I was told when I had one it can't be done but never did believe it please keep this updated.

RE: Project Barge - mr_fish - 01-10-2013

those tyres look just about finished off!

Does look like a nice cruising machine.

Good swap ThumbsUp

Little update, I've been using this daily and it's not missed a beat. The other weekend the Milkman and I went to pick up his new track toy from Portsmouth, then returned via Ace Cafe and Aylesbury. Other than a frankly dangerous issue where the auto lights seem to enjoy trying to kill me by turning the rears off at night, all is well with the bus. Extremely comfortable on the motorway and EPIC on fuel, got 44MPG with a loaded trailer on!

Oh, and the severe lack of power is depressing.

And I got it very sideways the other day on a wet roundabout, just a gentle reminder that the 306 really does handle well. And that this car is NOT a 306 lol

RE: Project Barge - Low_break - 18-10-2013

nice 406

RE: Project Barge - Kezzieboy - 18-10-2013

f*ck challengers, needs BBS CHs, are people not bored of cyclones/nimrods/challengers etc yet?!

Might have to do a photoshop later to prove how right I am.

But it's a towcar.

I'll make it quick enough to upset a few low spec bimmers and leave it at that.

RE: Project Barge - Kezzieboy - 18-10-2013

I meant reps tbh, f*ck spending a grand on a set of wheels. I spent a while doing shops and twawling the web a couple years back when I considered getting one of these, couldn't find one in the spec I wanted though at the time.

RE: Project Barge - Jonny81191 - 22-11-2013

Anyone want this for £750? It's got 5 months tax and plenty of MOT (Aprill IIRC, will check)

I've replaced the worn out rear tie rods and had it tracked, along with new tyres.

Mechanically it's now fine, there's a knock from the rear suspension, that's all.

I'm on track to get 800 miles from a tank at the moment, it's a true eco bus.

RE: Project Barge - procta - 22-11-2013

I had my dads 406 for a short while, it was the Dturbo version. only thing wrong was, the inlet gasket had bit the dust on it. he sold it before I could get the chance to fix the fault. I wish he hadn't as I was going to ditch the rover for it.
it was a really good drive too, I thought about btcc reppin it.
