Brake spanner size - Dum-Dum - 21-09-2013

What size brake spanner do you need to do the rear beam (the unions under the car and the ones on the flexis)

RE: Brake spanner size - Jimbo - 21-09-2013

11mm into the hoses

RE: Brake spanner size - Daniel306 - 21-09-2013

One of the best tools i own

RE: Brake spanner size - Connor - 21-09-2013

14mm and 17mm from the flexihoses to brake lines me tinks

RE: Brake spanner size - Niall - 21-09-2013

And you will want a 8mm for the bleed nipples

RE: Brake spanner size - tigerstyle - 21-09-2013

One of my rear nipples is 7mm.
I need nice new ones anyway, stop em all getting rounded off with age!

If i was you, when you take the rear nipples out, copper slip the threads.

NO NO NO AND NO again you crazy fooker. That will make things ten times worse.

There is galvanic corrosion if you have both ally and copper in contact. Never ever use copper slip on any alloy components.

Rear calipers are made of aluminium.

Any time i get a brake nipple out it gets replaced with a new one, and if you really dont want to use copper slip use aluminium stuff

Funnily enough i got that from a peugeot data sheet that was released to workshops after they all started seizing and snapping. Who says they are ally? Could be steel nipples (giggidy)

RE: Brake spanner size - swampy - 22-09-2013

The calipers are ally!!

Mine get replaced with stainless steel items and never have an issue!!

Best way to slacken any bleed nipple off is a deep socket!
Always use that method and have never had one snap on me

If your car has the compensator on the beam one of the fittings is larger

Yeah ive only ever snapped out but dont want to have to drill one out. Odd that peugeot recommend copper slip on the threads! They all have steel nipples in anyway so shouldnt seize.

RE: Brake spanner size - DeeTurbo - 22-09-2013

Copper slip on the fronts is fine it's just the rears you shouldn't.

RE: Brake spanner size - samass - 22-09-2013

Watch out guys, Swampy's on the war path again...

RE: Brake spanner size - Jonny81191 - 22-09-2013

Nipple spanners.

RE: Brake spanner size - Poodle - 22-09-2013

Had one snap on me earlier, despite using ludicrous amounts of plusgas, heat and swearing. I will definitely be copper-slipping the new one back in, can't make it any worse lol.

RE: Brake spanner size - Jonny81191 - 22-09-2013

What about using an anti seize jointing compound?

RE: Brake spanner size - Poodle - 22-09-2013

Yeeeeaaaahh buddy!

Edit: Oh, mechanical shizzle, um, yeah, fair enough.

RE: Brake spanner size - Jonny81191 - 22-09-2013

lmao

RE: Brake spanner size - Dum-Dum - 22-09-2013

Ive never snapped a nipple either, 8mm deep 6 sided socket FTMFW

Definitely the best way to do it. The one on my 1.8 i think i could of snapped with my hand though. No pressure what so ever and it went so it must of been dodgy.
Getting the steel lines out of the calliper without twisting the line is a different question though. Took me ages to work them free!

RE: Brake spanner size - Poodle - 22-09-2013

Tbf someone had mullered the clockwise shoulders on mine, so was blatantly over-tightened last time it got used.

RE: Brake spanner size - Frosty - 22-09-2013

I've had quite a few snap off. I find a little tap with a hammer helps though but the nipples do seem to be made of cheese
