hdi wont start! - tysonbully2k12 - 10-09-2013

i started my hdi today after a week drove 2 miles to put diesel in came back home, started again after a hour and drove 10 mile, then went to start it 30 minutes later and it wont start,
it primed as i could hear it,
its getting fuel to the injectors,
plenty of diesel in the tank
no fuses have blown.
would anyone have any idea of what could be the problem or recommend a cheap diagnostic that would read the sensors if it could be them

How quickly does she turn over? If you've run the battery down and it's not turning over fast enough she won't start, jum,p leads or a battery charger should sort that out sharpish. If that doesn't do it, then i'd suggest taking a look at the link in my sig. Smile

the battery was charged, and it still wouldn't start. we towed it home around 10 miles, and from doing that with ignition on and hazards on the battery was flat that it wouldnt turn over, so thats on charged. but i just bought a ELM327 usb, so im going to try that and if that doesnt help then ill try things from your guide,

i bought the car and drove it around 30 miles homes a month ago and it had been started every week when i was working on it, and then went on holiday and got back today, started straight away went 2 miles to get diesel, then left for a hour started staright away and drove 10 miles, left for 30 minutes went out and igniton on left it prime for 5/10 seconds and she wouldnt fire, so tried again and it fired for a second and then stayed turning over,
i checked all wires and fuses under the bonnet

RE: hdi wont start! - Poodle - 10-09-2013

Sounds like a worn-out battery to me, that or she's struggling for fuel pressure. Towing it ten miles with the hazards on shouldn't flat it, not by a long shot. Do you have access to a battery tester?

If you can get it to someone with diagnostics that would be ideal, see if you can find anything out of normal parameters - fuel pressure at cranking should be ~280bar.

i got a lad with diagnostics and it came up crankshaft/cam shaft sensor. so i got a new crankshaft sensor and it didn't fix it so have been looking around for broken wires. even tried easy start and that didn't work! we checked the timing and that was all fine, it goes to fire but then stops and i turn it over and the speedo goes to 120mph for some reason

RE: hdi wont start! - WILL1000 - 12-09-2013

Hi, think id go with a worn out battery. maybe borrow somebody else's just to try?

used a spare good one that i have, it turns over fine just wont fire, and if it does fire its only for a second then stops,

RE: hdi wont start! - Poodle - 12-09-2013

Clean up all your earths bud, that might fix it. To t6he best of my knowledge the dial sweep indicates one of two things - dead battery or bad earth. Also, bad earths will bring up random fault codes, often unrelated to the actual issue.

Incidentally, when my car stopped running the AA bloke was adamant it was a crank sensor issue - two years later she's still running fine on the same crank sensor it had then, so don't take what comes off the diags as gospel. Smile

cleaned all the earths up and still no go Dodgy so im thinking it could be the pump in the tank, there was gold filings in the bottom of the fuel filter housing? would that stop it starting?

Gold fillings is the key sign the pump is dead/soon to be dead. It might not providing the correct pressure needed.

would a pump out of a 406 xud fit it or are they different pressure rated?

RE: hdi wont start! - Jimbo - 13-09-2013

Xud doesnt use a low pressure pump if its the same as 306

RE: hdi wont start! - Toms306 - 13-09-2013

As above, the XUD doesn't need a lift pump like the HDi, its a completely different part.

RE: hdi wont start! - tysonbully2k12 - 13-09-2013

ok, is there anyway to test it? going to take it out tomorow, would it stop the car from starting though, theres diesel to the injectors,

RE: hdi wont start! - Toms306 - 13-09-2013

It depends how much fuel is getting through. If it's not pumping enough, there may not be enough pressure in the rail for it to start, the ECU will only let it start above a certain rail pressure.

RE: hdi wont start! - tysonbully2k12 - 14-09-2013

there is still fuel coming from the pump, so i do not know what is wrong with it now Dodgy
any ideas would a xantia d turbo engine fit?

hdi wont start! - Jukie88 - 14-09-2013

Look at the Ecu look to the right hand side of it you'll see a brown relay wiggle it and see if it starts if not take it off clean it wd40 it try again its the fuel pump relay mine was a non starter when it felt like it and this was the cause :-)

i had that off and cleaned it and put it back on and still no start, its getting annoying now, wouldn't be to bad if i had a good diagnostics

hdi wont start! - Jukie88 - 14-09-2013

Then there is only one more thing to try ......... Matches and diesel ??

RE: hdi wont start! - Poodle - 14-09-2013

Have you had a good look at the link in my sig yet?

i was thinking the exact same ha :-D

iv tried all of it, i dont know what is wrong with it, when i first got the car and turned ignition on the fuel pump would prime and i could hear it at the fuel filter housing kind of a whiring noise it would do it for about 5 seconds but now it sounds like a sqeeling pig

RE: hdi wont start! - Jimbo - 15-09-2013

Change the lift pump then
That or its out of fuel and the pumps running dry

RE: hdi wont start! - tysonbully2k12 - 15-09-2013

and i could turn ignition on and it wont fire but turn it on again and it will fire for a second, it seems to fire every second turn of the ignition

RE: hdi wont start! - bigtone0777 - 15-09-2013

Sounds like lift pump to me

would it make it fire every second time though?

RE: hdi wont start! - bigtone0777 - 15-09-2013

Yeah, could be building enough pressure 2nd time around for it to start. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but this is what Is be looking at first

ok ill try it,how much would a second hand one usually cost?

RE: hdi wont start! - Toms306 - 15-09-2013

Have you still not changed that damn lift pump yet!? lol

About £30 delivered for a second hand one.

nope TMI recession is on sure :-D i found one for 30 euro, just hope it works :-D

RE: hdi wont start! - Poodle - 15-09-2013

Lol yeah, sounding a whole lot like lift pump, in fact exactly as described in the link in my sig. Good job you had a good look and checked all the things in there. Wink
