Cancel insurance for £36, or keep an extra years NCB? - Dave - 03-09-2013

I currently have 6 years no claims bonus, as of january 4th 2014, I will have 7 years if I continue my policy.

Im going abroad so not needed anymore and would be due a refund, but would it be worth the £36 I would be refunded to loose what could be 7 years no claims bonus.

I genuinely cant beleive I'm getting so stressed about this, if I was 17, then having 1 years NCB for £36 would be epic, but have no idea about insurance now.

Dave

Lol get tge ncb. It lasts for two years after your policy ends. I presume your returning in less than two years?

Yeah, definitely get the extra year if you're only going to get £36!

Id keep the insurance mate. I dont think what anton says about keeping the NCB for 2 years is accurate with all the insurance companies

As above. its £36 quid. You will save more than that from having the extra NCB probably

Just a thought, are you keeping the car the policy is on? If your selling, it's illegal to have 2 policies on a car so you may get in trouble if you do that.

No Niall the car is being parked in my garden Big Grin

The other issue which my dad and anton just pointed out, what if I was away for longer than 2 years, does this mean all of my 6 or 7 years no clains will be written off?

Id just keep it, for the sake of £36. On the grand scheme of things its nothing really. And if you are away longer then when you return the space of time that you havent been insure for will be less than if you cancel it now so that may be in your favour.

Some UK insurers will honour NCB gained from abroad.

Just get the rents to re insure the car if you end up being away for more than 2 years or better still get the cheapest possible insurance anyway possible like 1k millage limit or ridiculously high excess and come back to 9 years Ncb!

Also from my experience, yes...

I had 3 to pass over when i surrendered my licence, lost them all after 2 years of no use.

Some companies take it up to 3 years, but i found it extremely hard for that to be the case.

Keep it, if the cars stolen its covered, also you will give yourself two years from January to re insure and keep NCB rather than two years from September

Thanks for your replies, I would have fallen trap to the 2 year gap loss of claims, so I shall leave it running to extend my time, and then if needs be, re-insure my 306 if its approaching the 2 years, cheers.
