Car wont turn off - Mike - 11-08-2013

Hey all, my car has devolped a 'not wanting to turn off when told too' problem.

By this i mean when i start it up, there is no glow plug light on the dash, i wait about 10secs and crank it and it starts fine, on occasions my dash lights dim an my volt metre drops slight volts an back up.
It will drive fine then when i turn it off, it just keeps running, all needles drop to the 'off' postion there are one or 2 lights on the dash which stay lit but only extremely faintly.
I have to cut the fuel to get it to shut off.

The problem has only just occurd, an the only thing ive tried is messing with an cleaning the earth on the n/s chasis leg by the gearbox mount and the one under the drivers footwell.
Also not sure if related but my central locking seems to work 1 minute then not the next, so am unsure if its an earth an there both related?

Tomorrow im going to relocate a few earths and see if it solves anything, but throught id post on here as you lot may have expierenced this before or know of it.
On a side note im running a tuned bosch but i dont think its over fueling and keeping the engine running, but im going to detune it just to make sure.

Thanks for reading and any advice given!
Mike

sounds like stop solenoid sticking on the pump.

RE: Car wont turn off - Piggy - 12-08-2013

stop solenoid would be what I would check first.

I think I got a spare one if you need?

And piggy yea ill be interested if it is my stop solenoid thats gone mate! Will pm you now

worth checking the voltage on the supply wire.

I have been known to change quite a few when I was at the garage

Do you have to take the pump off to change the stop selenoid?

No just whip it out with a spanner i think.

Should the live wire have live when the key is out of the car?

RE: Car wont turn off - DarkInferno - 12-08-2013

the switched live to the stop solenoid should be grounded when the key is out the car.

Sorted the problem, after messing around with earths and making better, meatier earths, i checked the wires goin to the solenoid, the red one, (the one u chop from the lucas) was working fine, i then checked the blue plug from the lucas, which i didnt know till now, shouldnt be plugged in.

that plug was keeping a 12v feed at the solenoid.
It had only just started doing after a few weeks of the conversion.

Thanks for all the help anyway people!
Mike

If it's not the solenoid, check the plugs at the bottom right of the engine bay... They often corrode and short out, and will cause it to backfeed the electrics - be careful as it can cause things to get hot, I've heard of fired due to it.
