Bigger blower on the cheap - Jimbo - 08-08-2013
Im thinking ive just about done everything to my car I can think of now I love the way it looks.its on a gov'd bosch and t2 at 22psi and it does go well. Id estimate 130bhp anyway.
Im going to get a bigger turbo I dont want to spend a fortune.
I want some suggestions so far im thinking k14-2 off a e300 td Mercedes. A td04 or a t25.
Remember this needs to be cheap making adapter plates etc is not a problem for me.
Oh and id like to keep a wastegate on it

You can put any turbo on cheap if you can make the adaptor plate, oil line and downpipe yourself

I realise this. I dont want to go to lots of effort for a small gain.

I say go down the road of a gt series, you can occasionally pick them up on ebay dirt cheap, or even get ones that need rebuilt from garages for free, rebuild kits are around 20-30 quid

Dunno tbh, i wouldn't rate any of the results that came from ray west... But a 2052/6 should in theory be good for about the sort of power you're after

I have a nice td04 with plates to mount it to a t2 manifold.
And soon a t25 on manifolds.

Merc turbo should be handy to find and bolts on with standard oil feed (was it a well kept secret for years?)
I have a TB2509 sitting doing nothing if you think that'll fit!

Yeah the only pain with the merc turbo is the downpipe as it uses a vband clamp I think

Bang for your buck, it has to be a td04 really
The Scooby guys just want rid of them when they go td05 so they're dirt cheap
And you'll easily see the power you want :-)

You just need to go on ebay and look at the 99p turbos and you will eventually get something suitable for next to nothing.

The pump governor was set up badly which didn't allow it to rev and it was de-tuned also to stop it cooking on the dyno. Once I had sorted the governor setup it was a lot better and I reckon it could have pulled 150hp on a decent tune. The torque was good though even with the bad setup, at one point it was slipping the paddle clutch in 5th.

The only thing that concerns me is the throwing of a rod. Has anyone actually pin pointed the cause of it yet? On the td04 that is

Yeah the rods are shit. Saying that when i took mine out they were perfectly straight and usable. Just put the hdi ones in for piece of mind.

You can't ask why they shit their rods on specific turbos as no one forensically analyses the causing. However you can theorise that the way a td04 is built for higher rpm power and is relatively 'laggy' on an XUD they have a sharp rise in torque and power over a relatively small part of the rev range and that could be a reason why
However I think most people that pooped a rod have said they weren't anywhere near the throttle or were just cruising at lower rpm
I think its a bit of a roll the dice kinda thing
I think service history may be a factor in it. If its been kept well it would last longer

I forgot to say aswell actually what the thread was about, bang for buck is td04 it has to be turbo cost me 50quid then plates were all free, 20quid on some 2.5" pipe for the downpipe weld it all together again free, oil line was 20 odd quid then the return line was a bit of heater hose which cost me a 5er i think . Definately cheap way to go.

Just because I can do it doesnt mean I want to be doing it haha.
Mind you could get cheap engine built up with some hdi rods.
Thinking I will go td04 just for the availability of it all.

Enough talk of Rods blowing! How longs a piece of string?
Lets face it, most cars risk blowing a rod after reaching double stock power.
The XUD can take a lot of abuse, live life on the wild side and hit 6k RPM daily. Yolo right? It'll be fine.

Heh, was taking the piss, but seriously, providing the cars well maintained and not ranted from cold (or abused in any other unnecessary YOBO manor) then your going to be prolonging the life of the engine.
Not really seen many dyno's going past 4.7~5k but doubt theres much power up there anyway unless your running a stupidly laggy turbo.
