Right! Storage issue problem

We have a school based network (so lots of mundane boring security stuff, such as a proxy) We all have laptops.

We get a pathetic 120Gb of network storage (we are talking about a science department with 12 teachers and 1500 students) The network person said NO to anymore storage, and refuses to budge, ignoring emails from plebs like me and the Assistant headteacher!

We have a VLE in place, but each single file has to be uploaded separately (VERY time consuming)

We've thought of a regular portable HDD, but thats a lot of plugging and unplugging, and copying to and from in situ

What we need is a cheapish web based storage solution, or a network based HDD solution that wont clash with the existing network and its (not really) sophisticated security. Can anyone help Sad

unsure what you'd be 'allowed' to hook up to the network but a cheap nas drive would do the job and simple to sort out

Wait a sec 120GB storage for the entire department? Are they living in 2003? If they're ignoring emails from the assistant head teacher it sounds like you need a new IT guy...

Are you asking how to get more storage or a way around the current limits?

I just thought for a sec about how cheap storage is and how simple and cheap it would be for the it manager to sort this out for you. Sounds like a bit of a joke.
Is this a case of someone being shit at their job but been there too long to fire them so them keep moving up?

To be honest I'd probably just buy another PC (HP Microserver N54L, can be had for under £100 if you look around and get it while HP have cashback going), stick in a few TB worth of storage. You can install Linux on it and set it up with some Samba shares which are easily accessible on Windows. Security might be a bit of an issue though, so the alternative would be to install Windows Server 2008 R2 on it and set up some shared folders on the hard drive using the windows accounts that are already set up for the school.
