Engine went in a friends 306 98 dturbo. would a xsara dturbo engine fit straight into a 306? simple enough swap?

yes, some had a semi ecu controlled fuel pump which is easy enough to swap for a 306 bosch and the rev counter sensor is different but just a case of putting a 306 fly wheel on solves that
