Small click, relay, Dead battery? Video added - ginge191 - 25-05-2013

XUD had a dead battery this morning (was only sat for a week) popped the jump leads on for about 10 minutes, true to start, nothing.

Disconnect leads, dash lights are on, but I get a small click coming from the back of the bay (from a small blue box, it's not a relay as such, more a transistor type internals). The click isn't the common starter motor (ba earth) click.

I only changed the radiator, no electrics at all.

Voltmeter reads 12v but I'm thinking its lost its flow? Does it sound like a fubard battery

It's been known to lose its juice on a number of occasions.

Any ideas to check before i fork out for a new battery

turn the lights on and measure the voltage again.
with a load on a charged battery it should measure 12v or very close
if it reads less under load its either flat of fecked

Take your terminals off the battery and clean them up, then reattach them. Mine just randomly wouldn't start and all I was getting was a relay click, took the negative off, cleaned the crap off it and boom, fired up

I got 12v during a sitting battery and also when the ignition was turned..
I'll give it a go. And forward to why I say "I hate electrics"

Do as pellowe says :-)

Or get a jump and get it running. Go for a decent drive and see if it hold charge

with head lights off, reading pretty much dead on 12, with headlights on, 11.85'ish

Cleaned all the terminals, still nothing.

Battery...

RE: Small click, relay, Dead battery? Video added - ginge191 - 26-05-2013

...dead?

RE: Small click, relay, Dead battery? Video added - Anton - 26-05-2013

I reckon so Smile

RE: Small click, relay, Dead battery? Video added - ginge191 - 26-05-2013

Yeh I'd guess as much; it's run flat 4/5 times now, after having as decent runs/charges

Would anywhere be open to get another one today, do you think?
He's currently forcing me to play scrabble so I'd appreciate something else to do...

Halfords, but only if you've got a trade card

would the car still not start, even when the 205 was hooked up to the HDI and have the HDI running so there is constant higher voltage?

RE: Small click, relay, Dead battery? Video added - Anton - 26-05-2013

Depends on various things. Amps of jump leads?

RE: Small click, relay, Dead battery? Video added - ginge191 - 26-05-2013

Pass; I know they're from halfords

That click sounds like the glow plug relay to me. Get a new battery, it's old cheap and been abused recently!

Thanks!
The glow plug relay; would that stop it from starting though?

RE: Small click, relay, Dead battery? Video added - andywhy - 31-05-2013

Glow plugs not coming on would stop it starting yes, but not from cranking.

I was thinking more in terms of shorting... causing the starter not to turn over

RE: Small click, relay, Dead battery? Video added - ginge191 - 09-06-2013

So reviving this; Samass and jonny1747198372 had a look over it, with extra earthing, live battery etc, and still I have a click? What else could it be? Fuses checked ..

RE: Small click, relay, Dead battery? Video added - ginge191 - 10-06-2013

bump to this; what have we/i missed? Sad

If this can't get sorted; the 205 is going to be broken for parts Sad
