De-Air con issues - Moonstone2.0 - 02-02-2012 So my belt has been squeaking like mad and I replaced the belt, auto tensioner and manual tensioner but no better. Decided to try another belt and remove the air-con so I got a 1205 belt and it fits very nicely bypassing the aircon. (Didnt remove the actual air con pump) But still squeaks like mad...more than before. So I sprayed on some WD40 onto each of the pulleys and all of a sudden the alternator pulley starts smoking. Turn off the engine and the belt is red hot. So loosen the tensioner a bit and try again. now the belt flaps a bit but alternator still gives off smoke. Could this be due to over doing the wd40 on moving parts or does it just not like the shorter belt. It's not tighter than the last one was. How do you know how tight the belt should be? HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP! Re: De-Air con issues - mark_airey - 02-02-2012 sure it wasn't the belt slipping more on the pulleys (due to being lubricated) causing heat which is burning off the WD40 = smoke, belt needs to be tighter IMO and IIRC you should be able to deflect the belt 5-10 mm on its longest run between pulleys using moderate pressure from your thumb Re: De-Air con issues - Moonstone2.0 - 02-02-2012 Ah...yes that could be it, i shall brakeclean it all tonight and try again! For some reason I remembered that the belt should be able twist a half turn! :S Re: De-Air con issues - mark_airey - 02-02-2012 Moonstone2.0 Wrote:Ah...yes that could be it, i shall brakeclean it all tonight and try again! that might work mate, no harm in trying And I'm sure that twisting half a turn is the cam belt if I'm not mistaken mate! Re: De-Air con issues - Moonstone2.0 - 03-02-2012 Right well cleaned it all up and put the belt back on but the alternator pulley heats up so fast and so much its burning itself out. To explain how extreme it got, I had the engine running for 15 seconds till it started smoking, then turned the engine off, for 3 minutes afterwards, it was boiling off brake cleaner immediately when sprayed!? This may have been the source of my squeak all along and now the bearings have died? cant tell where the horrendous squeal is coming from but now that it smokes like a chimney leads me to believe the alternator pulley is dead. So how do I replace the alternator? Do I, Remove coolant expansion tank Remove power steering pump disconnect alternator and unbolt and lift out ? is it that simple or does one of these things involve total dismantling of the engine bay? Oh and if anyone has an hdi alternator lying around...give me a shout. Still havent got a new caliper on... Re: De-Air con issues - mark_airey - 03-02-2012 Sounds like the alternator is f*cked then to use the technical term! also with the aux belt off turn the alternator, you will soon know if its that, if it doesn't spin freely the bearings are buggered! I probably have an alternator that will fit, stick a pic up and I will let you know either way because there are a few different ones Re: De-Air con issues - Moonstone2.0 - 03-02-2012 Ill get a pick of it tonight. Its not exactly free spinning when you turn it, it will turn but only by hand...and doesnt continue to spin at all. |
