Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - Chris - 30-01-2013

Yea with a big thanks to Niall and DeeTurbo I now have a fully functioning D8 trip computer working in the 6, Niall should be along with a nice guide for you all in the next couple of days.

Sorry for the crappy video but its just rested in the dial opening and the wires twisted together for now.
Will have it all fitted up properly tomorrow I hope.

Nice, i'll be on this when the guide goes up then, what details does it give you on a 6?

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - Chris - 30-01-2013

MPG average and instant
Miles traveled
Range left in the tank
Average speed.

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - Niall - 30-01-2013

Glad we got this sorted. Now need to empty my pm box haha.

Jamie, you get average mpg, instant mpg (i reckon i can mainitain single figures up to 70mph lol), Average speed, outside temp and miles till empty.

How burchery boo is it on the loom? can i just use scotch locks to do this Job?

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - sam - 30-01-2013

Yeah car taps as much as ed does Tongue

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - Niall - 30-01-2013

No because scotch locks are seriously pikey! Its simple to do mate. I will do the guide tomorrow but i reckon no more than an hours work (minus fab work to make the screen look pretty in the dash)

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - Chris - 30-01-2013

Cut one wire behind the clocks and solder 2 more onto existing wires.
For the clock wiring i used a old clock plug and added the wires to that so its plug and play.
Just a matter of running the wire from the ecu into the car then.

I want to do it so if it was removed you wouldnt know it had been there, and mine will take more than an hour , going to get busy with some fibre glass and a spare ph1 steering colum cowling ninja

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - Niall - 30-01-2013

Scotch locks are shit. I cant express my hatred for them enough!

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - Chris - 30-01-2013

What he said, just man up and solder it in.

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - DeeTurbo - 30-01-2013

SCOTCH LOCKS = FAIL

I tried using them when I was trying it out the first time and I had nothing but problems with them.

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - puglove - 30-01-2013

Meh i think you lot are just using them wrong TMI

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - Niall - 30-01-2013

No. Its widely known that they are a shit pikey way of doing things that can result in damaged wires and damaged kit depending on whats plugged in. Man up and solder them (just dont melt your jacket with the soldering iron!)

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - puglove - 30-01-2013

best get myself one then, lol , last one burnt out, it was like 15yro

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - Niall - 30-01-2013

If you get a screen in time, i can do it for you at the RR meet!

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - Chris - 30-01-2013

I've a spare l/km one?
Might even have a mpg one too if you ask nicely :p

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - puglove - 30-01-2013

Going to need to do some fab work and shiz first guys, tbh i have a couple electrical issues id like to sort first to aswell appriciate the offer though Big Grin

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - Chris - 31-01-2013

And fitted, just a little more filler work and some paint to do.
Also need to run the ecu wire through the bulkhead properly when I get time.

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - Niall - 31-01-2013

Looking good mate. Are you going to get a clock from a 406 to stick somewhere?

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - Chris - 31-01-2013

Hmmm I might do. Wonder if there's any room in the dials between the speedo and rev counter.

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - DeeTurbo - 31-01-2013

The 406 clock looks small in the dash but the unit is quite big. I was thinking of using one also.

Looking good though Chris. The fascia cut nice and looking like it will be very tidy when complete.

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - Eeyore - 31-01-2013

Looks like a good install! Ill be doing mine in the summer when im back from uni Big Grin

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - Midnightclub - 31-01-2013

Awewsome! Tempted to do this to mine depending on how fiddly it is.. should help getting a bit better economy at least

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - Niall - 31-01-2013

Danny its easy mate. Most difficult bit is what chris has done above. getting it to look good in the dash.

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - 4WayDiablo - 31-01-2013

Why does it matter. You don't buy a gti6 for economy

RE: Sooooo, GTi with a trip computer - Midnightclub - 01-02-2013

True, phill but it would be nice to know the sweet spots for economy especially on long motorway runs.. I don't really enjoy driving fast on the motorway anyway.. In the 6 its too noisy anyway haha
