Wow! it's great to be reading this and seeing you getting this car back on the road!
Good luck with the build, can't wait for the next update!

RE: darrenjlobb's Compound Blown Derv Bus - 2015 Resurrection / New Build - londondan86 - 16-03-2015

Mate! Can't believe I missed this! If I had have known I would have taken your hint a little more seriously the other week on the blower Sad

Oh well a modern vnt will he far more win anyway Smile So glad your doing something on this again mate.

When painting in a workshop just wet the floor and make sure your compressor has clean filters you won't have any issues wwith dirt/dust. Also prep is everything, and extra day sanding at the beginning will be 2 days saved at the end. Make sure you have plenty of light at all angles as it's surprisingly easy to put patchy coats on and not notice until it's too late!! Avoid the winter mix primer at all costs just makes for a bitch to sand. Any other questions mate feel free to drop me a pm, done quite a bit of body work now with good results Smile

RE: darrenjlobb's Compound Blown Derv Bus - 2015 Resurrection / New Build - darrenjlobb - 18-03-2015

Time for another small update,

This time some paint is actually flowing, in the form of primer, so got the car all degreased / clean as I could...watered down the floor (can see me using a spray can in video, this was quickly sacked off in favour of the hose pipe!!!) in the attempt to reduce dust, mixed up the paint, and let loose!

Am using an air fed mask to keep the fumes out of my lungs, health and safety first people!! Even if it is coming from me!

Spot the dent that I missed! :

Then i went ahead and sanded back the primer until it was smooth,

Then went ahead and cleaned off all the dust , ready to degrease / tack up for the base coat!

I'm trying to sort the car out, before i distract myself with the engine as per normal, or else it will never happen!

getting there Darren, I bet you have either painted this the same colour as one of your farm tractors, or an 80s beige!

RE: darrenjlobb's Compound Blown Derv Bus - 2015 Resurrection / New Build - darrenjlobb - 20-03-2015

Ok,

So ill show you what colour I painted it now, although, anyone who knows me / my general projects, will have already guessed what colour the farmer has painted his car! So I am already holding tight for the abuse!!!

I loved the black ph1, and in alot of ways will miss it, but I wanted the car to stand out a bit, and the most important thing I've always had with the car / project, is how its been built at home in a farm workshop, and is heavily inspired by "agricultural" ways of working...and anyone that knows me personally, will know my love for a certain breed of tractors!

So decided you only live once, **** it I'm going to paint my car JD green!!

As with all parts of this respray project, I'm on a steep learning curve, so as will become apparent in a few videos / posts time, you will realize why i call this the "first attempt" of spraying it, but this is the first time I laid paint on the car, but sadly it turned out that I was using a far to fine nozzle in the gun, which resulted in much to little material being shot, leaving a very "dry" finish, and alot of orange peel...but for the time being, this is how it went...

So started out by cleaning up the car / tack rag and mixed the paint up, got extractor / air mask on, and applied a tack coat, followed by 3-4 "heavy" coats, albeit, not very heavy with the initial gun setup!!

Redneck heating system got workshop temp up fairly well!:

Did engine bay and door shuts, trying to do it "properly" even if I dont know what im doing!

And then the rest of the car, what have I done!!! If you look close / in the video, you can really see how "dry" the paint is:

[Image: wxUILyBUF_olE_LKBDX-C5djMHW2DWsJPxB8XDZu...40-h987-no]

Mugshot!

And a video, can really see the issues here! Notice how thin / rubbish its coming out the gun....after sourcing the correct nozzle, I realize what an epic fail this was!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAyfLqpGyh0

Thanks for reading, I know its a bit criminal to the old ph1, but its only a paint job , it can be reversed heh, so not to much hate please! #farmerspecftw!!!

RE: darrenjlobb's Compound Blown Derv Bus - 2015 Resurrection / New Build - WiNgNuTz - 20-03-2015

lmao

You absolute legend! I had a sneaky suspicion you might go with this colour, but didn't want to say anything! Good lad, screw the haterz, i think it looks pretty damn good considering!

RE: darrenjlobb's Compound Blown Derv Bus - 2015 Resurrection / New Build - Piggy - 20-03-2015

I LOVE IT!

Haha! Tractor green! Seems the perfect colour to be honest Smile

Good effort buddy Smile

RE: darrenjlobb's Compound Blown Derv Bus - 2015 Resurrection / New Build - Niall - 20-03-2015

I f*cking KNEW IT!!!!

RE: darrenjlobb's Compound Blown Derv Bus - 2015 Resurrection / New Build - Piggy - 20-03-2015

we all knew it I think.

Keep forgetting to mention, I am no expert with painting, my best mate is a painter/bodywork guy, does lambos etc now....he was watching them and said for you to get a painters disposable overalls which help massively with stopping dust as your clothes/body are pretty bad for introducing the stuff being in so close quarters.

And to not release the trigger at end of each stroke to avoid build up but to "flick away" the nozzle at the end of each stroke/sweep ThumbsUp

RE: darrenjlobb's Compound Blown Derv Bus - 2015 Resurrection / New Build - welshpug - 20-03-2015

possibly too much pressure by the sound of it as well, and you havent got that flick at the end of the sweep I've seen every sprayer do.

Still, damn sight better than most peoples first attempts Big Grin

JD Yeloow wheels?

RE: darrenjlobb's Compound Blown Derv Bus - 2015 Resurrection / New Build - darrenjlobb - 20-03-2015

Hehe yeah, theres alot of things wrong with that first attempt, infact, watching it back now is fairly cringe worthy..Ive painted it again now...with the correct nozzle, which went alot better! Have learnt to leave air flow going all the time, and just flick the paint in / out, stops the splatter / dry start / stop! Takes a bit of getting used to, infact, painting the entire car twice haha!

Interesting point piggy about spray suit, sadly its done now, Dust really is the biggest enemy trying to do this yourself, but can only do my best. 90% of it will sand back, but at the end of the day its a 100 quid respray, so I guess in some ways, at least people will believe me I did it myself!!

Had the pressure in the green / at levels I was recommended, The main issue here is just lack of paint flow, the nozzle was A - to small, and B - should have bought new gun first as last as it was obviously massivel choked up, I went out and bought a new gun after with bigger nozzle, and was like a different tool all together, each stroke would cover 3 times the area and a thick shiny coat instead of that matt / non even finish!

Will upload some more photos / videos of next few days, luckily I bought enough paint to cover the car more than once, as I predicted epic fails!

Its all a learning curve! One that after this I dont think ill be repeating for a while...!

RE: darrenjlobb's Compound Blown Derv Bus - 2015 Resurrection / New Build - Piggy - 20-03-2015

Good lad Smile

Good effort!

Where did you buy the paint and primers??...seems very cheap!

RE: darrenjlobb's Compound Blown Derv Bus - 2015 Resurrection / New Build - bashbarnard - 20-03-2015

That's amazing. For some reason I was expecting it to go Leyland blue. This is just as awesome though. Spraying is a hard skill to learn. You have some balls doing it your own car. Well done man.

St Helens (AutoPaint)

Thing is, when you have your car repsrayed, your not paying 1500-2000 for paint, your paying for a skilled man, and a dust free spray vented room...these two items are replaceable at home, but im trying to do what I can. I simply cant justify that kind of money just for a paint job, even more so when its such a "lol" colour!

RE: darrenjlobb's Compound Blown Derv Bus - 2015 Resurrection / New Build - Piggy - 20-03-2015

Aye i use them.
Good company that.
I know costs involved but that still seems very good value!

RE: darrenjlobb's Compound Blown Derv Bus - 2015 Resurrection / New Build - Niall - 20-03-2015

Please tell me you're fitting yellow wheels as well?

RE: darrenjlobb's Compound Blown Derv Bus - 2015 Resurrection / New Build - Poodle - 20-03-2015
