RE: Matts rallye project. operation derust - Matt - 10-11-2015

Cheers guys!

And Niall! I owe you many a pint for doing that! Even if you guys did pull it out with the turbonad! lmao

Sam and Nathan, thanks guys. Appreciate the comments. It's spent so long as a rusty turd on various driveways I'm so happy it's finally on the road.

Haha yes grant! That was about two and a half years ago now! That caravan was the darkest place I've ever lived! So grimy and a pond for a field I had to walk through everyday!
But such good memories haha!

We'll have to organise something like that again soon Smile

RE: Matts rallye project. operation derust - Matt - 01-12-2015

Little update

Picked up my old red inlet manifold up of Dum dum at the xmas meet
It's thick with paint has in totall about 8 layers of primer and at the least 10 coats of vinyl paint, as it was purple before the red but I just painted over it

I set about getting it back to complete silver and I got it to a paint where it looks really good, but there is a few bits of paint I can't get off as its in a real hard to reach area

So plan is too paint it silver instead now

Few pics

Stripped it down with nitro morse

Half way round

[Image: 7626592C-B656-42E2-B5E5-1FCA47421B08.jpg]

And the top finished, as you can see it the bolt holes it's being a dick

Will work on it for a while and see what I can do

RE: Matts rallye project. operation derust - cully - 01-12-2015

a decarb brush in an electric drill will help with the hard angles Wink

RE: Matts rallye project. operation derust - Dum-Dum - 01-12-2015

Matt you are so close to having that ready to polish rather than paint, keep at the niggly bits and it'll be an awesome step towards a polished bay.

RE: Matts rallye project. operation derust - Matt - 01-12-2015

Think I may buy a demel and have a smash at it

RE: Matts rallye project. operation derust - Matt - 01-12-2015

Well I bought a dremel and took a wire wheel too it, that got most of it.

So how far do i go with polishing?

RE: Matts rallye project. operation derust - Matt - 01-12-2015

Well dremel got it looking like this

[Image: 72E44312-1F03-410D-B402-4C5F2F9EBD79.jpg]

[Image: 039ECCED-299E-4727-98F3-5DA37D787C67.jpg]

Then went out and got some metal polish too clean it all up

[Image: 990F5383-2560-4393-83BA-8F7F0EE21D6A.jpg]

Gave it a few cleans with this stuff, and it came out pretty good. Then cracked out the mouse sander with a polishing attachment

And it went gross

[Image: 2E453691-F30F-40D5-808A-335423D1AC9A.jpg]

Then dos this a few times, got into all the corners I could and then went over and polished again

It's now sat on my side looking like this

[Image: 8AE836B7-50E5-4BDA-8524-863E37BADB93.jpg]

I stopped at the cast line as you don't really see under it

[Image: 263C5468-01EF-49D9-B0DB-544AE089AF75.jpg]

I'm pretty impressed by this

I'm dead happy with how it looks, now to get hold of a spare set of rockers too do the same!
Throttle body is getting worked on tomorrow

RE: Matts rallye project. operation derust - Niall - 01-12-2015

Getting there Matt. Keep cracking!

RE: Matts rallye project. operation derust - 1616six - 01-12-2015

Great to see you turn this round and if you don't mind me saying, it seems like you've turned your life round too Matt as I know you went through a rough patch a while back. Pleased for you bro.

RE: Matts rallye project. operation derust - Dum-Dum - 02-12-2015

Polishing looks great mate. If you hit it with finer and finer grades of wet and dry paper before metal polish you'll get it even shinyer.

It's great to have Done it, feels amazing being back in it, driving it everyday Smile and thanks man, I didn't think it was noticeable, but yeah I have completly changed. I've cut some shit stuff from my life and now everything is better!

I didn't even know that! I went to 1200 grit wet, then polish. It will do for me. I don't want mega polished, just looking stupidly fresh.

Now can I lacquer over this? So it stays this clean or is that a no no?

RE: Matts rallye project. operation derust - Jonny81191 - 02-12-2015

Yeah, you can lacquer it, it looks great imo.

RE: Matts rallye project. operation derust - Matt - 02-12-2015

Okay awesome! What lacquer do I use? Run of the mill halfords stuff? As I'm not sure how well it will stick to the bare metal?

RE: Matts rallye project. operation derust - Jonny81191 - 03-12-2015

Yeah, normal Halfords stuff, I used a wire brush on a drill and then brake cleaner to degrease it.

RE: Matts rallye project. operation derust - Matt - 03-12-2015

It's been polished with metal polish, brake cleaner to get that off yeah?

RE: Matts rallye project. operation derust - Piggy - 03-12-2015

Polishing looks ace...
The thing i would say from experience is... It takes a LOT of effort to keep it that way under the bonnet

RE: Matts rallye project. operation derust - Matt - 05-12-2015

That's why it's been lacquered, litterally wipe clean now Smile

Throttle body is clean and lightly polished, didn't go through the same efforts with the body, but still looks good, will get pics up later!

Got a deposit down on some Rallye front seats from miles thanks to a tip off from Rowell, picking them up on Monday, also got some rears in the pipeline which is amazing! Just waiting on a delivery quote Wink

So Rallye should have a full Rallye interior by the new year!!

Now does anyone want a gti rear bench and mustang fronts? Hahaha

Body is done, not so extensive but looks good with the manifold none the less, excited to get these on, but it's waiting till spring, when it's warmer and I can do the whole bay in a day Smile

RE: Matts rallye project. operation derust - Matt-Rallye - 09-12-2015

Looking damn good sir Big Grin was nice to see it at the chrimbo meet Big Grin

RE: Matts rallye project. operation derust - Piggy - 09-12-2015

Sweet
...did the laquer take away any of the brightness?

RE: Matts rallye project. operation derust - Dum-Dum - 09-12-2015

Looking pretty damn good buddy.

RE: Matts rallye project. operation derust - Matt - 10-12-2015

Cheers guys Smile

The lacquer did make it slightly less silver, but I still love how good it looks. It's a shame it didn't stay as bright. But it is still bright, still polished, and a lot easier to keep clean.

Just waiting to source some gti cam covers, but is taking forever to find.

RE: Matts rallye project. operation derust - Jonny81191 - 10-12-2015

I might have some, I'll have a dig. Pester me though, else I'll forget

Cheers dude, yep cam covers are next on the list.
Once they are done I just have to tidy everything on the bay and get them clean, and once spring rolls round, make a start on the de rusting of chassis legs and under neath

Great to see this back on the road again Smile
