Re: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - Ruan - 07-03-2012

I did know that before, you big vajayjay...

Also, what happens if you request a line test and you're not a BT engineer, I know it says you have to be authorised and all that?

Will they kick your ass?

Re: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - Fooby - 07-03-2012

it got locked down years ago. So you have to have an engineer pin to access some stuff

other stuff requires no pin so therefore they wont know/give a shit

Re: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - con67 - 13-04-2012

Heres a good one mate though its the computer not the net, on my hp (2gig ram, amd dual core) with xp on forums only it seems I have to double click everything, if I click once nothing happens it just hangs and the little bar wont fill, tried with explorer, firefox(what I use most) and chrome. Is there something I can change as its really annoying on such a good fast modern computer. My dell and toughbook dont behave like this on the same connection but theyre both ancient and slow and I dont like my work laptops being on the internet as theyre full of work and no antivirus.

Re: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - Fooby - 14-04-2012

could be something to do with DNS. Are there any specific DNS settings setup on the lan connection on the machine thats running slow?

Give it a scan with malawarebytes too, incase there is something up with your hosts file (or its trying to browse everything via mywebsearch or something)

Re: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - Ben Jay - 02-05-2012

whats a good internet speed tester? mine seems to be going backwards...

Re: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - Fooby - 02-05-2012

internet speed testers are generally not a 100% sign of a problem or not, but its useful in context. But speedtest.net is decent enough

Re: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - Scott - 02-05-2012

What's more effective of whether you're getting full speed will be a large download from an FTP server, or jumping on a torrent for a linux ISO as they are generally well seeded and should (in theory) max it out.

Re: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - Ben Jay - 02-05-2012

it just seems to be taking ages to load random web pages such as the fhm sexy list ninja and takes a while to load youtube vids.

Re: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - Scott - 02-05-2012

What speed are you supposed to be on? What's the max speed you get downloading this:
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Leave it to download for a couple of minutes and it should reach its max

Re: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - Grant - 11-05-2012

Testimonial...

Can I just say a massive thanks to fooby for sorting my Internet out at the weekend. He came round for a fix it day at my house, and ended up re-wiring my phone line for me! Lol top bloke, Internet is easily twice as fast now!

Repped, oh hang on....

Re: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - lolsteve - 07-06-2012

Dont suppose you could help
I play team fortress 2 quite frequently , when playing at my student house (Orange home broadband) I have a fantastic connection as do my 3 other house mates who play simultaneously. However since I've come home for the summer and started using the internet here (o2) I get frequent lag spikes which also only seems to affect my laptop since Dad can play CounterStrike without going over 100ms
The internet speed should be more than capable so im thinking something to do with laptop/house not getting along?

Re: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - Fooby - 09-06-2012

maybe, could be wifi interference depending on if your wifi and he is ethernet?

is it o2 LLU or via BT? Orange is most likely on its own LLU network so you wont suffer from peak latency pings via BT

Re: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - lolsteve - 09-06-2012

I assume it's via bt. How would I find the difference?
My dad is using the Ethernet connection that works plugged into the electric line , in the student house(orange) everyone is using wifi so would have thought interference would be a bigger issue there

Re: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - Fooby - 10-06-2012

well i could check your exchange if you PM me your post code, see if o2 are LLU suppliers in your exchange.

Best way to check is perform a tracert to a website like.. here. Paste it in here. It will show me the route your connection goes so i'll be able to see if its via BT or o2's network.

If he is on Ethernet, as a quick test, you try using Ethernet into the router see if its any better. It could just be interference in your home area.

Re: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - lolsteve - 11-06-2012

think I done it right? I would try the Ethernet thing but dad's a dick and says his internet is fine so why should he let me use the Ethernet adapter

Re: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - Fooby - 11-06-2012

lolol, can you just plug into the router directly?

But, i dont think your on BT, so its odd that its having issues, if it was BT you'd have had a load more hops.

Traceroute looks fine to our server, low MS, so your internet connection seems ok.

Re: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - Scott - 11-06-2012

Shot in the dark here, but have you tried changing your DNS? Try using a different DNS provider (i.e. google)

RE: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - samass - 06-09-2012

fix my internet! its shit! or my laptop, that might be shit too... either way, fix it!
what do i need to show you?
other than me, naked Wink

RE: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - Fooby - 08-09-2012

i would sam, for like the 5th time.

But it always "fixes" itself, or you never bring it with you. Cant fix it if i don't have it!

RE: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - Tom - 24-09-2012

Our internet at home keeps randomly dieing sometimes 2/3 times a day.. the web browser says DNS lookup failed, go down stairs and the router says no internet connection.. We then reset the router and it comes back, but as you can tell resetting the router 2/3times a day isnt really practical.. What can you do? lol

Router is a Belkin N1 thingy with a screen its brand new and fecking cool (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Belkin-N1-Vision-Wireless-Gigabit-4-Port-ADSL-2-Modem-Router-for-BT-F5D8632-/270863498369?pt=UK_Computing_Wireless_Routers&hash=item3f10b8fc81#ht_3559wt_1002)

RE: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - Fooby - 24-09-2012

should be fairly easy to resolve.

To start, can you give me your router stats?

RE: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - Tom - 24-09-2012

Im not exactly a smart when it comes to this stuff so im going to need some help with what you need lol Will pm you to save filling this page with my stupidity Smile

RE: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - Fooby - 05-01-2013

Yep its f*cked.

Although you are far from the exchange you should have at least 2mb.

Its connected at the right modulation (G992.5)
Its got "fast path" rather than "interleaved" on, fastpath shouldnt really be enabled on any lines >30dB, yours is 61.
Your output DbM power is shit, it should be 12 and 19, so you have most likely a line fault.

So, i'd start with getting an interleaved profile, it adds more CRC checks so basically takes your speed down a bit, but yours is already very low and it should make it more stable.

To confirm the line fault the next thing to do is plug your router into the BT Test socket (its found by removing the faceplate of the main BT Socket in the house) and sticking the router in there. You only need to do this quickly so its online for around 5mins and then paste the stats back in here again.

RE: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - burnmw - 05-01-2013

Right, this is nearly 10minutes after switching the phone line from Master to Test...

Configured Current
Line Status --- SHOWTIME
Link Type --- Fast Path
Operation Mode Automatic G992.5(ADSL2+)

Data Rate Information
Stream Type Actual Data Rate
Upstream 915 (Kbps.)
Downstream 759 (Kbps.)

Defect/Failure Indication
Operation Data Upstream Downstream
Noise Margin 5.4 dB 6.1 dB
Line Attenuation 38.2 dB 61.0 dB

Indicator Name Near End Indicator Far End Indicator
Output Power 12.6 dBm 0.0 dBm
Fast Path FEC Correction 0 0
Interleaved Path FEC Correction NA NA
Fast Path CRC Error 13 16
Interleaved Path CRC Error NA NA
Loss of Signal Defect 1 0
Fast Path HEC Error STR 7 14
Interleaved Path HEC Error NA NA
Error Seconds 25221 7529

Statistics
Received Cells 153050
Transmitted Cells 96727

Can't find a way to switch it from "Fast Path" to "Interleaved" though, any ideas where I should be looking?

RE: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - Fooby - 05-01-2013

your SNR for noise has dropped from 7.2 to 6.1 which is good. It might settle down a little bit more after that (you may have a faulty internal extention, but we'll get to that)

unplug the internet again, stick in a analogue (non digital or cordless) phone into the test socket. Dial 17070 option 2. Listen for any noise, wind, rustling etc. It should be perfectly silent.

If its not, then you phone BT and bitch you have noise on the line (dont say anything about broadband). Once they fix the noise, your internet should behave as it should.

I'd also phone EE and tell them to put you on an "interleaved" profile.

Fooby unsure where to find router stats so i got this?

Also if thats not it, these are the choices i have:

RE: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - Fooby - 09-01-2013

6meg down seems ok, but it all depends on your line stats.

Try some of the below links, it should give you the information i need:

Line Stats (inc SNR stats)
http://192.168.2.1/ADSL_status_main.stm

Line Stats (error stats)

RE: Fooby's 'I'll fix your internet thread' - Niall - 09-01-2013

Quite comical really that this is THE ONLY thread fooby ever comments on!

Found it Fooby! Had to do a bit of googling, you have to log onto the router and get into developer mode and then type something and it tells you! So here we go Smile
