it got locked down years ago. So you have to have an engineer pin to access some stuff
other stuff requires no pin so therefore they wont know/give a shit

Heres a good one mate though its the computer not the net, on my hp (2gig ram, amd dual core) with xp on forums only it seems I have to double click everything, if I click once nothing happens it just hangs and the little bar wont fill, tried with explorer, firefox(what I use most) and chrome. Is there something I can change as its really annoying on such a good fast modern computer. My dell and toughbook dont behave like this on the same connection but theyre both ancient and slow and I dont like my work laptops being on the internet as theyre full of work and no antivirus.

could be something to do with DNS. Are there any specific DNS settings setup on the lan connection on the machine thats running slow?
Give it a scan with malawarebytes too, incase there is something up with your hosts file (or its trying to browse everything via mywebsearch or something)

internet speed testers are generally not a 100% sign of a problem or not, but its useful in context. But speedtest.net is decent enough

What's more effective of whether you're getting full speed will be a large download from an FTP server, or jumping on a torrent for a linux ISO as they are generally well seeded and should (in theory) max it out.

I play team fortress 2 quite frequently , when playing at my student house (Orange home broadband) I have a fantastic connection as do my 3 other house mates who play simultaneously. However since I've come home for the summer and started using the internet here (o2) I get frequent lag spikes which also only seems to affect my laptop since Dad can play CounterStrike without going over 100ms
The internet speed should be more than capable so im thinking something to do with laptop/house not getting along?

maybe, could be wifi interference depending on if your wifi and he is ethernet?
is it o2 LLU or via BT? Orange is most likely on its own LLU network so you wont suffer from peak latency pings via BT

My dad is using the Ethernet connection that works plugged into the electric line , in the student house(orange) everyone is using wifi so would have thought interference would be a bigger issue there

well i could check your exchange if you PM me your post code, see if o2 are LLU suppliers in your exchange.
Best way to check is perform a tracert to a website like.. here. Paste it in here. It will show me the route your connection goes so i'll be able to see if its via BT or o2's network.
If he is on Ethernet, as a quick test, you try using Ethernet into the router see if its any better. It could just be interference in your home area.

But, i dont think your on BT, so its odd that its having issues, if it was BT you'd have had a load more hops.
Traceroute looks fine to our server, low MS, so your internet connection seems ok.

Shot in the dark here, but have you tried changing your DNS? Try using a different DNS provider (i.e. google)

Our internet at home keeps randomly dieing sometimes 2/3 times a day.. the web browser says DNS lookup failed, go down stairs and the router says no internet connection.. We then reset the router and it comes back, but as you can tell resetting the router 2/3times a day isnt really practical.. What can you do? lol

Yep its f*cked.
Although you are far from the exchange you should have at least 2mb.
Its connected at the right modulation (G992.5)
Its got "fast path" rather than "interleaved" on, fastpath shouldnt really be enabled on any lines >30dB, yours is 61.
Your output DbM power is shit, it should be 12 and 19, so you have most likely a line fault.
So, i'd start with getting an interleaved profile, it adds more CRC checks so basically takes your speed down a bit, but yours is already very low and it should make it more stable.
To confirm the line fault the next thing to do is plug your router into the BT Test socket (its found by removing the faceplate of the main BT Socket in the house) and sticking the router in there. You only need to do this quickly so its online for around 5mins and then paste the stats back in here again.

your SNR for noise has dropped from 7.2 to 6.1 which is good. It might settle down a little bit more after that (you may have a faulty internal extention, but we'll get to that)
unplug the internet again, stick in a analogue (non digital or cordless) phone into the test socket. Dial 17070 option 2. Listen for any noise, wind, rustling etc. It should be perfectly silent.
If its not, then you phone BT and bitch you have noise on the line (dont say anything about broadband). Once they fix the noise, your internet should behave as it should.
I'd also phone EE and tell them to put you on an "interleaved" profile.
