Erm yes you can test the alternator charging in situ!!?

Just test the voltage across the battery!!

RE: f*ck you GTi6 - waiting for the AA - Chris - 16-09-2012

Got one or three here.
Can get it posted out tomorrow?

Also get it running pop a multimeter over the battery should read 14.7v if its charging.

For the sake of 20 miles Id rather have a working alternator.

Oh in that case its f*cked, the best I had after removing the jump leads was 11.5v ish and it dropped down to 9 before the car cut out.

Electrical indeed. Normally it is accompanied by dimming lights! lol

Check the wires are attached to it properly and are not corroding else you'll solve nothing.

RE: f*ck you GTi6 - waiting for the AA - Matt - 16-09-2012

Have an xsi if it's the same?

RE: f*ck you GTi6 - waiting for the AA - Chris - 16-09-2012

RE: f*ck you GTi6 - waiting for the AA - Dum-Dum - 16-09-2012

Chris that sounds great. Is it guaranteed working?
Whats the mileage and condition like?

Will you PM me your pay pal or bank details and ill sort the money out.

RE: f*ck you GTi6 - waiting for the AA - Chris - 16-09-2012

Came off sams old 5dr one, working fine, unsure of the milage though as it had the engine conversion.

RE: f*ck you GTi6 - waiting for the AA - darrenjlobb - 16-09-2012

Probs just knackered regulator / brush pack on the alternator, costs about 15 normally for brand new / 10 mins to change...that's all that genrally dies on alternators...

I have a feeling it could be worse than that, it had been eating my coolant overflow hose.

Very very bumpy road near tesco in Havant
Long straight. If you go over the bridge come down then hit the bump you get air.... not that I would know

Nope not that one, right down the bottom of Hayling Island by the gun emplacements on the long straight there.

RE: f*ck you GTi6 - waiting for the AA - stevieg - 16-09-2012

only read tour reply about what happened. alternators f*cked. the abs and airbag lights come on and normally cars run like shite when the battery voltage gets below around 11/10 volts

RE: f*ck you GTi6 - waiting for the AA - Dum-Dum - 16-09-2012

Cheers Stevie. My airbag lights aint coming on cos all the ECUs and wiring for them has been binned. Is there anything I need to know about changing it.

RE: f*ck you GTi6 - waiting for the AA - stevieg - 16-09-2012

check theres close to battery voltage on ignition at the thin wire first as it won't charge without voltage there unless the engine revs are past 2500. other than that just disconnect the battery

EDIT: heres a link to the one i got http://www.hcdk.com/Default.aspx?ID=7&GroupID=Alternators1061&ProductID=113438&replacing=VALEO or you could try a new voltage regulator as thats what goes on them 99% of the time which you can find on ebay with some cross referencing
