Hi

A 10w-60 is too thick and isn't protecting properly as it won't be flowing as it should be.

A 5w-40 is the best option

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS NT/CFS, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Shell Helix, Fuchs Supersyn and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

As a budget choice, a 10w-40 will be fine and I would either go for the Fuchs XTR, Shell Helix, Millers XSS or Motul 6100

You need an MTF for the gearbox and I would go with the Redline MTL, Amsoil MTF or Fuchs Sintofluid.

Not a 306, but a bmw e60 530d '05 plate (m57n)

Its the ll04 spec long life oil i think - what would you recommend please? Could do with 8-10litres. Cheers

They're all goods oils, so go with any brand or price preference that you have (the Fuchs GT1 XTL 5w-40 is a bargain for what it is).

Thanks for that Tim, the fuchs gt1 xtl is a 5w-40 oil whereas the recommended 530d oil grade is 5w-30. May i have your thoughts on this please.. has done c. 135k miles. Would a 5w-40 be ok? Cheers, Niv.

Hi Niv

That car (and pretty much all BMWs) can use a 0w-30, 5w-30, 0w-40 or 5w-40 (various oils in those grades meet the BMW LL specs) so the GT1 5w-40 is absolutely fine.

As a matter of curiosity, why are you recommending 5w-40 when peugeot recommend using 10w-40 in a 1.9dt 306?

A 5w will give better cold start protection than a 10w, plus there is a better selection of 5w-40 oils than there is of 10w-40.

The oil in my car is needing a change within the next few miles and I'd like some recommendations as to what oil is best to use was looking at fully synthetics would that be beneficial to me?

Make: Peugeot
Model: 306 D Turbo estate
Year: 1998
Engine type: XUD9TE
Performance modifications: None yet
Driving style: (road / off-road / track etc) Road with occasional track use.
Any other information that may be relevant: 125,000 mile engine
What recommendation are you looking for? Engine, Gearbox, Diff etc.

Engine and Gearbox oil if possible as the gearbox feels a little notchy at the minute

3litres then check the dipstick and fill accordingly, whilst giving sufficient time for the oil to reach the bottom of the engine between filling and checking.

Sump plug just get on the floor and have a look lol

Engine type: Common rail diesel
Performance modifications: Stage 1 map, De-egr and free flowing exhaust.
Driving style: Road
Any other information that may be relevant: 125bhp map, I've had the car since new and have serviced it regularly but I have now done 314k mile in it. I've always used 10w40 but some people are telling me I should go up to 15w40. I feel I should stick with 10w40 but what would recommend? The car still runs a treat and still pulls really well.
What recommendation are you looking for? Engine oil

Was thinking about using Shell Helix ultra as I've heard good things about it and I'm using helix at the moment and it seems very good.

hi,

I would like to change the power steering fluid on our car a Peugeot 306 2 litre hdi estate phase 3 1999/2000 with p/s and a/c.........what power steering fluid does this car use as I'm a bit confused............red or green??

all help greatly appreciated.......also while I'm there perhaps it would be good to change the manual gearbox oil as well............what oil does that use please........

Hi

The best options for the PAS are the Amsoil ATF, Red Line D4 or Fuchs ATF6000, although the others are fine as cheaper alternatives.

Driving Style:City driving, fair bit of abuse
engine has 128k(roughly) on the clock.

Been told to use Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel 0w40.
