Top engine mount buffers shimmed correctly?

Mine does exactly this, and am fairly confident it's the top mount & buffers.

RE: NSF HEAVY suspension clonk/knock - pug306driver - 27-10-2015

It is a HEAVY knock/clunk as you pull away or come to a firm stop. Both at low speeds.

Maybe relative movement in the drive shaft splines , either on shaft or cv to drive hub, but not that likely, as noise is repeated under braking,

So, movement of a centre metal tube in rubber bush perhaps, do all the suspension thru bolts actually clamp the metal inner tube tight, is there some movement in the metal tube, contact with the metal tube and its chassis mount, they should be "solid" when the tru bolts are tight.

I have a clunk on the n/s which sounds as if its a metal tube "moving", a metallic clunk and is quite loud. I will be taking the car off road ( finally, stuff just keeps getting in the way, but that's life ) this week end for defo as stuff needs to be done and this noise investigated. An exploded view of the top of the strut mechanism would help.

Its been suggested the top of the strut damper rod may be moving in the top mech, turn plate/spring plate/bearing plate etc.

RE: NSF HEAVY suspension clonk/knock - Piggy - 27-10-2015

Ive just rebuilt the strut top mount pugdriver.

In my experience Welshpug, the polybushes are a huge upgrade and when I removedthe wishbone last week for inspection, were like new despite having done probably 20k now.

Not entirely sure what you mean?

The 306 afaik doesnt have "top engine mount buffers"?!

RE: NSF HEAVY suspension clonk/knock - Stef205 - 27-10-2015

poly bushes are naf! a good oem bush will last much longer ive got 30k on my wishbone bushes atm. Have you checked the usual top mount mounting that likes to crack and break away? Or even the strut had that many of times on 306's

RE: NSF HEAVY suspension clonk/knock - pug306driver - 27-10-2015

any pictures of the top strut mountings etc...

Different to a 205 bud Sad

However you can fabricate a shim to slide in out of angle iron, or is that what you're getting at?

Seen OEM and even thos expensive OEM+ p bushes snap at low miles.
Sorry... But just not trusting them!

Strut tops are fine as said...

And no, as said, I'll lift engine off its mounts this week at some point and have a good nose ?

Nope... Other than in my build thread.

Not sure why you would wana see them?!

RE: NSF HEAVY suspension clonk/knock - Stef205 - 27-10-2015

by strut i mean the damper

Ah yeah, no thats fine as far as I can find/check

Had it all apart to do top mount etc and no play, unusual feelings from it etc

Also only rebuilt by GAZ less than 5k ago

RE: NSF HEAVY suspension clonk/knock - welshpug - 27-10-2015

got any other dampers you can throw on?

Nah

Suppose i could swap sides (without connection ARB link)

NSF HEAVY suspension clonk/knock - ben10241 - 27-10-2015

Have you ruled out the exhaust knocking on the chassis?

Yeah its not that sort of knock...

I know that sound well lol

RE: NSF HEAVY suspension clonk/knock - mackat - 27-10-2015

Shame you're not closer as I've got a nice cluck from my NSF and wanted to swap the front shocks out to see if was them.

Don't suppose you get the cluck on full lock just after startup?

RE: NSF HEAVY suspension clonk/knock - Piggy - 27-10-2015

No, mine is only on moving/stopping

RE: NSF HEAVY suspension clonk/knock - pug306driver - 28-10-2015

hi piggy, had a good look but could not find your rebuild thread, please could you post a link ?

an exploded view shows you whats what and where it fits etc., forwarned is forarmed as it where.....

I didnt do a dedicated thread, theres just a picture or two in my main build thread recently

RE: NSF HEAVY suspension clonk/knock - PUGNUT_XS - 29-10-2015

I have the exact same issue and its annoying the hell out of me. on mine i have all new shocks, drop links, lower arms, ball joints, drive shafts.  I have uprated the gearbox mount and engine mount with pug1off group N mounts, i have not done the rear lower mount yet as i dont have a press to press it out. i have been all over the NS but cant find any clues as to what the noise is. again on gentle pull away i get a clonk and when you give it a bootfull.

RE: NSF HEAVY suspension clonk/knock - Piggy - 29-10-2015

Pugnut... You dont need a press. Cut couple slots through it and smack it out ThumbsUp

Powerflex red lower bush just slides in

Cheers Piggy, ive got a BBM group N mount set, the new lower mount needs to be pressed in, i will give it a go though.

RE: NSF HEAVY suspension clonk/knock - Piggy - 29-10-2015

You could use a puller to get new one in. I've done that before

RE: NSF HEAVY suspension clonk/knock - welshpug - 29-10-2015

freezer and an oven, and a bucket of cold water.

Think I may have found my problem, a slipped rear engine mount:

RE: NSF HEAVY suspension clonk/knock - welshpug - 02-11-2015

how did that happen?! those sleeved bushes are usually a bloody tight fit.

I could see a naff poly bush causing issues as they can do that as they're not bonded

Sad Sad

No idea! Thats a vibratech engine mount which was pure hell getting in - plus an OEM rear mount.
Not sure how I'm gonna fix it, but I suspect I'll be using the engine hoist very soon.

RE: NSF HEAVY suspension clonk/knock - welshpug - 02-11-2015

no need for a hoist to sort that, just remove the two bolts and tilt the engine, socket and a vice or a long bolt then add a tack weld or two.

RE: NSF HEAVY suspension clonk/knock - Piggy - 03-11-2015

hhmm wow. glad you found yours.
Mine is fine there.

It was interesting yesterday to really listen as I wandered through gloucester... it is often more than one clunky click... as I pull away it is at least two but never more than three clunky clicks and when I stop, usually just the one.

But its not the usual CV joint click and managing a silly speed in a circle in both directions, its not cv joints I dont think lol

RE: NSF HEAVY suspension clonk/knock - Jonny81191 - 03-11-2015

I'd chuck a driveshaft in just to be 100% sure.. Also, any chance of a video?

RE: NSF HEAVY suspension clonk/knock - zx_volcane - 03-11-2015

Having been in the car and hear this, I don't personally think its driveshaft related.

It is a very positive clunk when setting off or coming to a stop, sound like nearside front.

I would have guessed wishbone / pbush or top mount / actual damper unit. Or failing that engine mounts.

But if you've had a bar in everywhere and everything is tight, then I'm not sure what to suggest.

see Volcanes comment... it's just not a shaft noise, 100% sure.

I am trying to sort a video though.
