I used to be interested in the Leon FR tdi (the common rail 170) but I've gone off them a lot lately, and now definitely want a 3 door rather than a 5 (even though they're semi blended in.
That ED30 looks pretty sweet to be fair! Part of me likes the Scirocco 2l tsi with a map, they're pretty reasonable. Only thing against them really is that my mum has just bought one
I'm quite liking the 350z though that isn't quite as economical as I'd have hoped. Very reliable though and good looking, and very much well specced for the price they go for now (for a GT with the heated leathers etc). They're heavy but still more than capable from what I understand. I'm yet to drive one though.
There are a few nice Alpina b3.3s around as well, though they're quite expensive to run as well it seems (less than an m3 but more than the zed)

No I think anything by Volvo would be a good bet. Rich's v40 t4 is pretty good and smooth so anything for 9k and newer should be good enough.

Get something a bit more special with that cash imo, instead of a run-of-the-mill car like a golf or a 1-series.
Are you not into older sportscars or Jap crap? It might be impossible to find and own something like an old TT Supra, Skyline or RX7 / similar in the near future.
Either that or something like an Integra Type R (DC5) as they're a bit newer.

You'll be surprisingly disappointed with a 350z - drove my friends before he sold it... reallly disappointed for what it is, and MPG's were ridiculously low. He could sensbily drive and be lucky to see 20+ mpg. Although the V6 does sound pornographic and a bose sound system is quite nice..

And Scott, i'll be honest, i have no input into this thread, 9k is WAAAAAAAAAAAY over my budget, and i wouldnt have the first idea what to look for in a car for 9k. There have been some good suggestions though, so i cant help but feel like my assistance is not required here.

Right, now all the sensible suggestions are out of the way, forget about all the dull econo-boxes and drive one of these. 245bhp V8, AC, cruise, heated leather armchairs, acres of space, limo ride and still pretty good handlers when you feel like it. Fair enough, you won't get 25mpg ever, but it's way under your budget, will qualify for £250 a year classic insurance, and won't constantly break because it's too complicated like all modern cars.

I actually forgot the best bit. Buy a 9k Focus ST for example, it'll be worth 4-5k in 5 years (which isn't bad for a newer car), but spend 3k on the Benz, and it'll be worth at least 3k...

You knew I was going to say it.. There's even an T5 AWD in there - Over 200hp, will do 25mpg, some of the best seats in it's class, quiet, reliable, chassis underneath is Focus, surprisingly neat in the corners...

There are too many which are highly strung or have ridiculous cannons on the back which aren't all that appealing to me unfortunately. Build quality and comfort are superb, they look fantastic, and sound great.

An Evo or Scooby wouldn't really fit the reliability requirement I'm afraid, they need to be serviced far too frequently and aren't quite the daily driver I'd be looking for.

How about a Chrysler 300C SRT8, it shuts down half the cylinders round town to save fuel and there is ways of switching the traction control off

Early 80's 911SC would be a good bet, much simpler than a 996, easy DIY maintenance.
The W124 is a great car Scott, and they are very cheap. The E220 will get mid 30's on a run and has enough power, the 230CE is slightly slower and thirstier, the 300CE and the E320 will both get low 30's on a run, but they are quick cars and great to drive. Besides rusty front wings and leaking boit lids they're bulletproof.

Have you ever been in a 300c though? Its like a 70s hospital! Utterly horrible and the ride is just disgusting. Plus you look like your trying to be a posh bastard but clearly couldnt afford that rolls so had to go for a cheap shite alternative.
Your right, the VRS isn't as quick as they like to make out (like most VAG stuff imo) but still a lot of kit for your money

Well the 3 Saab dealers I know of round here are still in existence. They just sell other makes as well now. Parts are just as easy to get as they ever were.

Its not though, a moderately nippy FWD estate with electric windows, dual climate control, a stereo and pretty much the same as any other family saloon. If your going that route I'd have the Mk4 Mondeo either with the Volvo T5 (Focus ST/RS lump) or the awesome 200bhp diesel. Its better handling, better looking comfier better laid out bigger inside just better at everything. The only reason to buy an Octavia over a Mondeo is if your going for one of the 4WD ones.
Oh and the 300C isnt a poor mans roller, its a rich mans Merc (probably based on a Merc chassis lol) and far more gangster
Actually Scrott what about a Merc CL500 or SL500, might even stretch to the AMG. Obviously it wont do 25mpg but it'll go like an AMG Mercedes. Actually for £9k you could get the drop dead gorgeous Nissan Sylvia (200SX S15) or probably even an R33/34 Skyline GTR
