Personally I'd be going for some sort of handbrake/brake lock if left for any length of time too. Also amazes me how many people never engage a steering lock when leaving a car. If the steering lock is pre-engaged no-one can just slide hammer the thing out FFS!
That's one thing i always do and that's pre engage the steering lock, I have an idea on something to at least help keep it safe. It saved the day with the metro too.
